Somewhat OT but figure this group knows "steel" as well or better than any other.....so.....

I had a bumper fabricated for my camper truck and I am just now getting around to painting it. I'm treating (wire brush, sandpaper'ing) the little bit of rust that's accumulated but here's my question(s):

How well do I need to scrub the rust?

Will self-etching primer be good enough for what little rust is left?

How likely is that rust going to eat through (if it does at all) 10 years? 50?

Bumper is only about 80lbs fwiw

Thanks in advance for any advice

I am no expert, but that looks pretty superficial. If you wanted to, you could probably use a chemical rust remover to make it perfect.

After wire brushing/wheeling and a wipe down, coat all rusty areas, or the whole thing for that matter, with a rust prep like Jasco Prep & Prime (http://www.jasco-help.com/product/prep-primer). Converts iron oxide to iron phosphate and you're good to go for prime and paint. Cheap as well and available at most any hardware store.

Very minor, as has been said wire brush and prime. The bigger issue will be where parts are not continuously welded, you will get rust bleed from underneath add salt to the mix and..... you may want to caulk with a paintable caulk B4 the final paint coat.

Clean off as much rust as you can with a wire wheel. Spray it with Rust Mort to convert anything that might be left. Clean, prime, and paint and you should be good to go.

Beyond that I use Fluid Film on my rigs to keep the rust away. It's been proven with me that it works to keep rust at bay here and New England. Testing at the Naval Surface Warfare Center of Coatings to reduce corrosion found it to be one of the best.

Stuff works.

double OT, but can we see some pics of the "camper truck"???

when i was younger, raw speed and handling were what got me excited in vehicles - these days, i'm all about absolute utility vehicles.

oh - and i agree with William concerning the rust situation.

I agree, I want to know what that Bullbar is going to be attached to?

There is a rust inhibitor paint will turn the rust into a black thing and then you can scrape it or just prime and paint over it w/o any problems. It works, I used it years ago in a GMC jimmy that I had, door panels with nasty rust and holes, put that and the rust stopped right away. I thought was not going to work. Patched the holes with SS sheet and screws, rode that 4x4 easy for like 3 more years w/o even painting over the SS, rust never came back.

I am anal so I would take it have it media blasted and powder coated :)

You're in Arizona - it'll never rust enough to be a problem even if you leave it bare. But, I'd do the rust treatment thing. Then brush some decent quality farm equipment black enamel on the frame. And I'd have the new bumper powder coated. It'll look great for a long time.

Amen to this. With #2's arrival in Oct it was time to sell the "go fast" car and get a family truckster for the next 6 or so years. I got a PriusV for daily work/family duty with caveat that I got to get myself a weekend/camper/hunting/overland truck.

Here she is. When I first started looking I of course wanted a legendary LC but for budget I allotted myself the majority of rigs found were either way too beat up and/or came with at least 250k+ miles.

I (with the help o two buddies who're much more 'car' mechanically inclined) set about looking for a rig that was big enough to car camp in, 4x4 capable, and easy to work on, and I couldn't be happier

Nice rig. Is that a home-brew bullbar or did you have someone fab that up for you?

Ha...this thing has some gnarly "Arizona pinstriping", I"m afraid a freshly powder coated accessory would look too outta place :p

I'll look into the farm equipment enamel. Others have said LineX or Rhino-liner.

Ha....local dude put it together for me. He's starting his own little niche company that caters to the local 4x4 scene and makes adjustable panhard bars, idler arm kits, lift kits, bumpers, skid plates, etc.

He's crazy good, he makes this.....look like that

See if you can get close to the trim color of the truck when you coat the bumper. That would look nice!

Places like Tractor Supply will have the black paint for the frame. Look for something sold as "Majic Tractor, Truck and Implement paint" The smallest size will do ya.

If you go that route, Durabak is preferable in my opinion. I used it on my 60 and it held up amazingly well.

This was right after I applied it (and before I put the sliders on). Even after a number of years it didn't fade.

I found out about here...

There are some good instructions there on prepping and applying it. I also posted up after I did mine. Tough stuff.
