For my new gravel build, I picked up a used Velocity A23 O/C rear rim laced to a White Industries T11 Shim/SRAM hub for a great deal today.

I will be running a 10 speed Shimano XT (11-36t) cassette. From my research, it sounds like I will need to use a 1.85mm AND a 1mm spacer to run the 10 speed cassette on the 11 speed hub. Looks like the spacers will be fitted on the freehub prior to fitting the cassette.

Anything else I'm missing? Anyone else running a similar set up?

For reference, the remainder of the drivetrain will be SRAM 10sp (Rival shifters, X9 RD (long cage), Rival FD, Apex crankset).

Thanks in advance

Looking at the shimano tech docs for XT 10s cogsets, yes, 1.85mm spacer but no 1mm spacer. But after installing it it's loose, add the 1mm one. BUT it doesn't come with the cogset like with road shimano 10s cogsets.

Thanks a lot for that info.

You're right -- based on the Shimano tech docs, the road 10sp cassette doc explicitly shows a 1mm spacer in the exploded view, whereas it does not for the XT 10sp cassette.

I've ordered both spacers and will try it out with just the 1.85mm first.

Is it obvious when a spacer is needed? I just put a new Sunrace 11-40 ten speed cassette on a Shimano FH-M756 and it doesn't seem to be any less tight than the 9 speed 12-34 that came off.
Thanks

If the lockring is tight and the cassette is tight it does not need the soacers. 10s Shimano on a 11s hub always needs the 1.85. Road needs the 1.0 as well. Mountain does not.

It actually seems to me that if I had a spacer I might not catch enough threads on the lockring. Thank you

So if one is buying a 11s hub and plans on putting a 10s cassette, a 1.85 and 1.0mm spacer should be put on after the smallest cog?

Depends. Shimano 10 speed road cassette on a 11 speed hub, you need both spacers on before the cassette. sHram 10s cassette, throw it out, get a Shimano and do like above.

Typically these spacers are used behind the largest cog, not in front of the smallest cog, if needed.

No, goes onto the FH body first, then the cogset.
