no, really. My engineer bro-in-law brought his favorite Christmas present to town:

the Hololens.

A fully contained microsoft based computer you wear on your head like a visor.

It uses voice and finger gesture controls to help you do crap and such. You feel a little like the guys from the kids in the hall squishing things with your fingers, but it was entertaining:

He uses for 3-d modeling (cad-cam guy) but I got to use it to squish virtual bugs with lasers that were crawling out of the walls of my mother's den. (God, I hope that's all he uses it for.)

It will be really neat in a few years, but for now it is in it's advanced infancy.

All those sic-fi shows over the years ( think holodeck from Star trek and minority report combined) had it right and wrong in so many ways.

After a round of hunting aliens, I returned to the safety and comfort of my iPad with a curmudgeonly grunt. I will not go lightly into this brave new world.

Great show... red green show was good and the other one where canoa head was, was a good show too (4 on the floor or something like that?)

I have a couple of friends that work on the hololens. I have used one before and its very impressive. I definitely like it more than VR (oculus or vive). Still have a long long way to go (the field of view is not good enough yet) but its definitely the future.

Microsoft has been kicking it up lately.

The future is just around the corner.

VR is nice, but....MR is where it's really at. Check out this fantastic wired article from Kevin Kelly about what's just around the corner.

oddly its not new

it looks like its a pricepoint now to be brought to the masses as opposed to the 8 million quid system we used

MR will be cool but I don't believe anything till I see it. Everything I have seen from Magic Leap I don't believe, it is all vaporware to me. Or it is a wip and that is all it is but you look at it the way they present it and looks amazing.

Microsoft did the same thing with the hololens. Watching their videos you think they are farther ahead then they really are. Still needs tons of work, it is not submersive at all.

I had roughly the opposite experience when demoing the hololens.

it is cool but seemed to amount to just a fun toy, I have worked on developing an industrial application for AR. Still has some way to go.

VR/AR may be a part of the future, but a lot of work is required IMHO
