Just bought new shoes and am in need of new pedals. Currently have Speedplay Zero that have a lot of up and down play in them, so I figure its time to change them also. Debating on staying with the Speedplay or maybe going to Dura Ace 9000. Opinions welcomed

Service the ones you have and get some new cleats. Doneski.

Cleats are new, pedals are about 5-6 years old.

How about Look Keo carbon. Good, bad or ugly? Saw a pair in the box at my local thrift store. May go back today and pick them up and pass them along here.

Made the switch from Speedplays to SPD-SL 10 years ago after seeing Dr. Pruitt in Boulder, Colorado. He said I needed something with "more stability".

Were you having knee issues?

For what it's worth I recently switched to the Keo Blade 2 and they felt noticeably more stabil. Maybe the word I'm looking for is more solid, not sure how to explain it but they felt powerful. Note: this was by the recomondation of my fitter as you can widen your stance a bit more with that pedal. Guess I got wide hips.

Any Shimano pedal will serve you for many years without requiring any maintenance. Get the Dura Ace if you want something light/ bling

I was having major fit issues, back pain, limited range of motion. Changing pedals was just one of several other recommendations. He took a holistic approach. He looked at everything. He reset and gave me a starting position from which I was able to branch out and made it my own from then till now.

Time RXS

I had very poor luck with RXS pedals, and Time in general. Using Shimano Ultegra SPD-SLs now.

Shimano 105 spd-sl might be one of the best values in cycling unless you are a weight weenie.

Get some cleat covers to extend cleat life a lot; makes walking easier also.

I rode Speedplay for years believing their claim that your pedal surface is not the pedal and the whole cleat on your shoe. When I went back to Shimano I was shocked by the feeling of stability and the wider platform. It made me realize I was formerly riding on lollipops. Sure, I liked the Speedplay float and dual sides but screw that small interface. (And this was on multiple pairs of carbon soled shoes so it's not like my shoes were soft or worn out).
Try the Shimanos.

You mean to tell me that Look pedals with Delta cleats aren't the only type of road pedals out there? Wow!

I'm all Campy all the time. But Shimano makes the best pedals, my road bikes have SPD-R Ultegra and 105 and my cross bike has XT.

Never had problems like that ever with time pedals, bad luck?? :(

BTW do you have some time cleats moving around? I use two left ones or is two right ones? :D Got lucky with a set a got in a swap meet, came with two cleats of the same leg :) Saved me of buying a second pair.

About the xpresso,, and any over the rxs I have not even bother testing them because they had bad reviews, why fix perfection... the impact was darn heavy but there was no way to destroy that pedal. The original time pedal was great aswell. And all the changes just because they needed to get lighter... bad move.

What about Keywin?? those things are solid apparently, the cleats lasts forever. I want to try those so bad...

I just went the other way and have a pair of Dura Ace 9000 pedals with three rides and new cleats if you go that way (also some older ultegras if you want to try something inexpensive).

I like the Shimanos but like the lower stack of Speedplays and really like the ease of dual entry. The Shimanos do provide a great platform though and in my experience they're the type of part that you put on the bike and forget about. They just work.

+2. It's all about platform size, and platforms are nothing without support. You can't balance an enormous platform on a pin point.

I haven't tried them myself, but SPD-SL's please a lot of people.

Get a new set of pucks for the SP and new cleats=new pedals.

As to changing, depends if you want to give up some 'features' of SP..double sided, adjustable float, easy service, more adjustable..For shimano pedals. shimano pedals, I admit, are great pedals, far better choice than Look, IMHO.

Might look at 6800 pedals also. Better bang for the $, IMHO.

The group I ride with is about 75% Shimano and the rest are Speedplay. I haven't tried SP and I am sure the dual entry would be nice but I just like the platform of SPD-SL too much and if I am picking my ride route I am not clipping in and out THAT much.

I have old beat 105's, 6700, 6700 carbon, 7810 and 9000's. If you are patient you can get 9000's for slightly more than 6800 from UK web. I did and my used 105's were about the price of some cleats. I don't race or ride in mud so I think these pedals will last forever.

I also support the switch to Shimano but would encourage saving some $ and getting Ultegra or even 105 level pedals.

DA 9000 pedals are being sold at nashbar right now for 146 - free ship. that's a hell of a hard price to beat for the best road pedals on the market.

Between Speedplays, Time, Look and Shimano's, Shimano has everyone beat in the maintenance department. Super well-sealed bearings, not bushings, that go for ages without needed any attention. Starting to get a little squeeky or crunchy? Pull the axle off with the Shimano tool, throw some grease in, reassemble and the old grease closer to ingress point is pushed out. Both pedals done in all of 5 minutes. Add to that stability, solidity, and cost. Very hard to beat.
