There's something a little oxymoronic about making a living out of being a minimalist, but whatever. I enjoyed the movie in the theater. During the crazy season, it's a little apropos I think. I hope you enjoy it if you watch.

That is what qualifies for minimalism in our (western, USA) society for a significant portion of the population, but by no means for all. For much of this county, for much of the world, their minimalism would be living in absolute luxury.

And, although they espouse minimalism in both thought and possessions, their possessions and living spaces, and whole approach, appear a bit too curated.

This is miminalism.

I chuckle a bit when I see the hip bachelor living in a tiny apartment with a chair, a lamp and one cup or whatever. Though the bit later on about avoiding consumer culture as a family with kids resonates a bit more, passively setting an example as a parent without making a big deal about some count of possessions, writing a blog about it, or, perhaps more ironically, making a movie about it...

Anyone seen "captain fantastic" yet?

It's out on video, and looks entertaining:

(This is where I would link the trailer if I knew how)

We saw it and enjoyed it a lot. I recommend, esp. if you like Viggo. GF is the film critic. She gives it 4/5. Minor criticisms.

After travelling for 5 months pulling an RV trailer, my wife and I had no problem living in ~200 sq. ft. Kinda surprised us, and had no desire for more space. We just spent our first night sleeping outside the trailer when got to my dad's place in Savannah GA. OK, we still have our home and will be back there in a few weeks, but living in the trailer was quite easy.

No effing way this 62-year-old body could sleep on the floor like that. ;-)

I enjoyed it, as did my wife who as a side effect of her film degree hates most movies. We only go out to see a couple of movies a year together.

I can only imagine. I only took one film class and it changes your perspective on movies for the good and for the bad.

I think I'll ave it for the holiday weekend and sorry to OP for the thread Hijack.

Agree that there's no absolute definition of minimalism but as a country at least, we could do far better. We buy into the "stuff makes you happy" and we do it in droves. At the minimum, it provides some counterpoint to "normal" attitudes about things. The older I get, the more I see the wisdom in less stuff.

I did watch their documentary on Netflix last night. I do like that they're not being prescriptive and legalistic about how people implement minimalism into their life. The point is that their message gets across and folks consider it. A rather quiet counterpoint to advertising that attempts to dictate what you should buy, how you should feel and not give a S**T if you want it or not. Then rinse and repeat.

I did pause for thought a couple times that they are effectively selling paperbooks that tell people to reduce the amount of stuff they have. Wait, didn't you just ADD to the amount of stuff they have? The reverse might be that they got rid of far more because of the book and kept the book for reference later.
