I liked Flash's choice of words in the art vs. craft thread.

work·man·like
ˈwərkmənˌlīk

adjective
showing efficient competence.

Let's see some examples of these bikes. No frills, no extraneous flourishes.

Perhaps my favorite.

Welded, no over the top matchy/matchy details. Clean/simple paint job, and design choices. Not cheap, for sure. But I don't think cost necessarily disqualifies it from being workmanlike. Though, if someone posts a Meivici, I might change my mind ;)

Hold on, let me put on my sunglasses to behold that.

On April fool's day, someone should call Dave Kirk and ask if he could finish the entire frame with gold leaf.

so some framebuilders are not offended when they are called "artists"...what about the other way round, will they get offended if we call their products "workmanlike"?

When I think Worksman, I think of a tricycle with a box between the rear wheels.

in keeping with the OP's original intent (and color scheme?):

Welded "moron" tubing, steel fork, used (via Paceline) components, and a joy to ride. I slightly flattened (with a file) the bottom side of a weird bulbous rear brake mount, allowing it to clear 27mm tires... I should ride it more, but my 650b bike gets all the (too-meager) miles now. :-)

I'd say it does, but I am not the final arbiter of such things. If it gets the job done, with the minimum of fuss, then I'd say it qualifies.

I am interpreting "workmanlike" as meaning to emphasize what the framebuilder has done in his craft rather than a consumer-centric vantage point that is predicated to how a buyer built up his bike or however he feels about whatever he feels about his bike.

Elegant simplicity. That is a better definition for my Bruce Gordon Road than the term "workmanlike" which imbues a tinge of commonplace that this type of bicycle craft, and that Mr Gordon in particular as a frame builder, does not deserve. It is IMO very hard to be skilled but not showy, exemplary but not self-elevating. These qualities are evident in the bike frame as they similarly exist in the man. Bruce Gordon - a builder that is most certainly NOT all brazing rod and no miter.

Fork tips. Campagnolo. Flat metal transitioned to round fork but seamless all the same.

Almost as in continuation from the Art vs Craft thread: Sure there needs two to complete the circle as to either art or craft. But it had to start somewhere and it wasn't with me simply because I decided to buy a bike - it started with Mr. Gordon's talent to build a thing of beauty that I would someday wish to own for myself. He made it possible. Me? I'm just going along for the ride!

Pure and simple. Nothing fancy other than being a HiMod. Does it's job and doesn't complain. Will never hold you back. Really can't get a better race bike - different but not better.

What is there to be frustrated about?
The original question is so vague (define "workmanlike") that almost any answer is OK.

I guess another answer could be; whatever Ant Bike Mike does....

"Workman like" - I took it to mean a bike with clean lines that aren't overly ornate in joinery or paint.

I'm not entirely sure I get the definition, but I'm going to take it to mean: "a classy frame. parts that work well but don't break the bank. meant to be ridden year-round, for years. something your mechanic would ride."

to that end:

I like to think my Skeletor applies, in spite of the loud ano it sports. No carbon, save for the fork, just a no frills race bike.
