I stumbled across the Terrene Elwood 650bx47 (http://terrenetires.com/elwood/) recently online, not in person.

the Light casing version reminds me of a Switchback Hill but with MSO tread. Neat!

Promising reviews here (http://g-tedproductions.blogspot.com/2016/10/friday-news-and-views_21.html) and here (http://ridinggravel.com/components/tires/terrene-tires-elwood-checkpoint-2/).
They appear to be sold out in all versions...:(

Discuss.

fills a weird void between the WTB Horizon 650x47mm and a Schwalbe Thunder Burt 650x2.1"

I think the new Specialized Sawtooth will be dropping in a 650x48mm version soon as well ...

I personally am going to "experiment" with 650 WTB Horizons on my Soma Wolverine early in 2017. Excited!

I know there are a ton of variables and difference between frames, but can anyone give me an idea of how the size compares to a 700c? I have a bike that regularly runs 38s and can fit 40s which are on an 18 internal diameter rim. I am assuming that a switch to 650b wheels would allow me to run a little larger tire, but am just unsure if that is really true and if it is true, how big I could fit.

The Horizons are hot right now but that Sawtooth looks sweet and adds some tread. Instagram is full of builders throwing those Horizons on everything - the gumwalls look so good.

I came across these very recently as well. There are a lot of cool tires in this tire size, enough to design a bike around it. :)

Get a metric rule. Measure from the center of your dropout, to about 320mm along your chainstay. At that point, measure the distance between your chainstays. I'd recommend at least 3mm on either side of 47 for adequate clearance in dusty conditions, more in muddy.

This looks like a pretty similar idea, though it doesn't appear to be as aggressive. Now that I see them together, I wonder if the Sim tire moved the knobs too far down on the casing to be of much assistance unless you are leaned over to the point of sliding out.

I just stumbled on these as well and have a set incoming :hello:

The reviews seemed favorable and I like the background of the company and what they are doing. It did look like an MSO at first glance. I was thinking of the WTB Riddler, but that seemed more a true dirt/trail tire whereas this has more of the pavement flare to it as well. I will report back once I get them rolling.

Is there anything out there yet in a 605B/27.5 "road" tire bigger than 47/48?

the maxxis re-fuse, i think they make a 27.5x50c. it is tubeless and bombproof. my buddy is rolling on those with his 3t exploro.

love my 47c horizons....but was looking for something with some tread/knobbies. nice find!!!

i'm gonna keep and eye out for a pair! i can't go any wider than a 47c on my gravel bike, not enough clearance :(

I'm not against it, but neither am I sure it's needed (slick wider than 2"). But, yes, there is the Schwalbe Big One in 27x2.35 (http://www.wiggle.com/schwalbe-big-one-tubeless-easy-275-mtb-tire-snakeskin/).

I have the Elwood's in the 650x47 Light version. The sidewalls do feel quite thin but will see how they hold up once I get them moving on the roads/trails. On a set of Stan Flow EX's (25mm ID) they measure right at 47mm, though I need to check the air pressure.

This was my first tire I setup tubeless and it was a breeze. Just used a floor pump, a few fast pumps and it popped and seeded on the rim. It's been holding air for well over a week now. Build should finish up shortly, so I will provide some feedback.

Thanks Rob pal, look forward to your feedback.

I am thinking about this because I don't want to rip up the compass switch back hills on the more gnarly gravel but seeing that it's more expensive than the SBH, I am having second thoughts. When bike tires are more expensive than the tires that I put on my car, something is wrong with my priorities. :D

Well, I used to. For many years, I was duped into paying more for "premium" tires before I realize it's all marketing and markups. Now, I buy the mid range, not base, not premium, just somewhere in the middle. I experienced ZERO degradation in driving performance or mileage.

My set came in. Easy peasy tubeless with a floor pump. Just about 47mm. Feels like a fancy tire in the hand.
as if a Switchback Hill and an MSO merged together, just as I had hoped

Yes it is true, because the 584 rim is smaller in diameter than the 622 rim. The outside diameter of a wheel with a 700x23C tire mounted is very close to if not precisely identical to a 650Bx42. Clearance at the fork crown and chain stays might not permit that much width, of course.

The founders' story says all the right things to me.

My rear 650b disc wheel is out on loan for a while, so I haven't actually ridden the tires yet. :(

Are your wheels still waiting for new shoes?

Thanks. The carbon Stan's wheels are great in many ways (though a little noisy to my ear), and a great tire further improves things.
