View Full Version : warning on fixed gear

Let my embarrassment be a warning to others. I found out after the fact that my fixed gear chain and sproket make for a very quick and effective finger remover. I was fortunate to lose only half of my right index finger nail end, just enough to chip the end of my bone and shorten the digit by about 1cm. I wish that I had seen Sheldon Brown's "Fixed gear dangers".

Tandem syncronizer chains will do the same thing. Don't ask me how I know.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your mishap. Hopefully you're not in too much pain, and will heal up quickly.

What were you doing? I have three fixies, and any tips on specific situations to avoid would be appreciated.

Wiping your chain by holding a rag on it and spinning the cranks backwards with your other hand real fast while the chain's on the little ring'll do it, too.

Don't ask me how I know that. Don't straighten your index finger is all I can say.

My chain appeared to be less than smooth when spinning in my bike stand. I adjusted the rear wheel tension and position a few times with no improvement. I decided to wipe the chain and add some lube. I spaced on the chain wipe, probably from years of no-worry with derailleur bikes. My finger traveled with the chain and rag right through the sharp teeth of my 19t cog. This is where I found my fingertip after returning from the emergency room. My typing has suffered a big hit.

Sorry to hear about that one. Ouch! I know I've had my personal brain freeze when working on my bike. Fortunately my finger healed.

THANKS FOR SHARING THE PICTURES. :crap:

Right after lunch, too.

I feel for you, I really do. I cringed just reading the account, but I didn't need the graphic details.

Heal quickly.

ouch

feel for ya man

a co-worker and teammate did that to his finger while changing out my fixed...in 1992...unfortunately, the rest of us started giggling and imitating beavis and butthead from the one where beavis got his finger cut off by the chainsaw....

hope you got more immediate sympathy from those on the scene

gasp.

i've heard stories, but never saw pictures before...

my dad had a lawm mower accident that "snipped" the tips off of two of his fingers...

the pain was such that he couldn't sleep for a solid week.

my sympathies (sincere) and best wishes for a fast recovery!

I caught my thumb a couple years ago - no 'loss' but having the tooth from
the cog go through the nail into the nail bed was bad bad bad pain.
