My front shifter (shimano 105 triple ) has become increasingly harder to shift into higher gear (2nd to 3rd). It has no problem down shifting. I tried spraying it with WD40 while going through the full range of motion to work out any grime or issues but that didn't seem to do much. Is this usually a sign of needing a new front shifter, cleaning the shifter or getting a new front derailleur? The bike is just over a decade old still stock.

I would suspect the problem lies with the cabling. If it were my bike I'd install new housing and cables. I doubt the issue is with the derailleur.

Yep. Cable guide under the BB can get really gummed up with spilled drink mix. Brush and hot soapy water solves that pronto.
