View Full Version : What 46x36t cranks are out there?

I am wondering what 46x36 CX cranksets are out there? It would be for a BSA BB. I am thinking of buying an Ultegra mechanical hydraulic group and while I like the new crank style, I don't think they look very durable.

Do companies like Raceface make cinch system rings that have this chainring configuration? I know White Industries does, but that will be muy $$$ :(

I am not a fan of FSA, but am open to other ideas.

It would be hard to go wrong with the Shimano CX70 (http://www.shimano.com/content/sac-bike/en/home/mtb1/drivetrain/crankset/fc-cx70.html).

I recommend sticking with your original choice of the Ultegra 6800 crank (http://bike.shimano.com/content/sac-bike/en/home/components11/road/ultegra1/fc-6800.html). It's plenty durable and reasonably priced.

SRAM Red/Force/Rival/Apex.

I have both Red and Rival running Campy 10, work well.

What aspect of the cranks, specifically, do you think is a problem? I raced most of this cx season on 6800 46/36 cranks, smashed them into rocks on trail rides, etc. and had no problems.

Hollowtech crank arms have been abused for quite a long time off road. I can't imagine a cross race putting up much of fight...

It's an aesthetic question. I have silver Campy on there now and they look nice even when worn. I don't race, so it is really just regular trail riding.

yes, the Ultegra stuff seems good quality. I am just wrapping my head around straying from Campy ;)

The Campy Cross stuff looks nice.

I have an Apex crankset that I just took off, has a 34t small ring and a 46t Salsa big ring. It's for a GXP BB though.

Maybe Sugino? Some of them are pricey though

The 6800 cranks don't look durable?
wha?

That's the one thing they are, above all else. Get em. I have some 46/36 rings for sale.

Yep - my 6800 46/36 cranks have been bulletproof - for the price, you can't beat them.

He may not respect me, but at least he agrees to build wheels for me :D. When Campy declined to offer compact cranks in 180mm (or 177.5 for that matter), I had no option but to look elsewhere .

Get any set of 110mm BCD cranks, go buy some chainrings in the ratio you want, go ride. AS for durability of the 6800 crank? I don't think you have to worry about that. Many, many cross racers using the DA equivalent in cross w/o issue. What's not durable about 5800/6800/9000 cranks you feel?

Lots of aftermarket 6800 compatible CRs out there too..TA for example.

This. I have the alloy cx11 on my Kirk and they work great. Don't let the power torque design stop you.

I like the SRAM S900 in 46-36 CX configuration. Force-level without as much branding.

I'm guessing you want modern, with outboard bearings. If not, look at the IRD Defiant (default gearing is 46/36) (http://store.interlocracing.com/irddewicorod.html), the Herse (mucho $) (https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/cranks/rene-herse-double-crank/), Da Vinci (by White Industries) (http://www.davincitandems.com/components/) and all the 50.4BCD cranks (TA, Stronglite, Sugino, Velo Orange, SunXCD, et. al.)
