Does anyone know if there are different versions of the rack as this one seems to have a different design than the current one they have

Yes there are different versions. I have one that does not ratchet shut, just a friction lock thing.
You would see that from the other side.

I wonder if that is an old design. Looks like it would sway a lot side to side.

I bought about a year ago a 2" heavy duty for two bikes with a 1 bike addition....and it doesn't look like that. Mine looks like the picture on their web site.
