Probably need a 1 1/8" standard or external cup headset.

Which frame? Are the headset bearings outside of the headtube when installed or inside?

If it's just a standard headtube with bearing cups outside, probably one of these.

It's science.

"Violet travels the slowest so it is on the bottom (least bent) and red travels the fastest"

You should look for the ones that say "Cane Creek" instead of "Chris King."

I agree, especially the Cane Creek 110 if you want a high end headset that comes with a 110 year warranty. I got a 110 on my lynskey and so far no problems after only 3 seasons, but I have to wait till I'm 170 years old to see if I'll use the warranty or not...

Considering other/all options- I've never had to source a headset, all frames purchased have had useable hs installed

Cane creek as suggested above..

King 1 1/8" NTS are pretty bombproof; are available by the boatload on eBay and here (I have a couple of standard black left); come in many colors; come in "standard" (bold, white letters) or SV "Sotto Voce" (subdued letters) graphics.

If you don't like the slightly bulbous look of the King, or if you need a shorter stack headset, then Cane Creek (several colors), or tune "Bobo" (made by Acros, many colors), or Campagnolo (silver only) are viable alternatives. Headset "stack" is the vertical distance the headset upper and lower cups occupy:

1 1/8" Chris King "NoThreadSet", SV: total stack height = 31.4mm (upper = 17.7mm; lower = 13.7mm).http://www.twohubs.com/PortalDocs/170/Chris-King-NoThreadSet-headset-03.jpg

1 1/8" Cane Creek "110 EC": total stack height = 28.0mm (upper = 16.0mm; lower = 12.0mm).https://www.universalcycles.com/images//products/large/52743.jpg

1 1/8" tune (Acros) "Bobo": total stack height = 24.6mm (upper = 12.4mm; lower = 12.2mm).http://katalog.bikeboard.pl/katalog2013/s6picz_tune_bobo_headset_blue.jpg

1 1/8" Campagnolo "Threadless": total stack height = 24.5mm (upper = 12.3mm; lower = 12.2mm).https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0037/3982/products/ProCycles43-Campagnolo-jddcrt-Jeu-De-Direction-CAMAPAGNOLO-Record-Headset-1-1_8-Threadless-web_grande.jpg?v=1362775085

I have no experience with FSA, but I'm sure they're fine.

I am a big CC fan. Their lower end stuff is solid and robust, the high end is superb. And, parts are interchangeable among their product tiers so upgrade is simple.

Here's a good resource: https://www.canecreek.com/headset-fit-finder . Modern headset nomenclature makes the results applicable to other.

I think we've mentioned the best headsets you can buy, the top two being Cane Creek and Chris King, the stuff I read over a year or so before I got my CC 110 seemed to indicate that the CC 110 was the better of the two, but this is research you need to do to find out, some people like CK because of the vast color selection and for no other reason! Either are a great headset and will last the life of the bike if properly cared for.

Cane Creeks in both my road bikes. Set and forget.........unless you need a little more stack height as the King has a 31.7 total stack, the Creek is less than 28mm.

I am not a CK fan but their headsets are just fine.
That said, Cane Creek 40 is really hard to beat for the value. The 110 is even better.

CK no thread is a great set. CC 110 is what's on my new frame's tapered head tube. Made in their plant in NC, went together perfectly, excellent finish.

Gotta remember what a headset does, I think. Holds fork on and allows the h-bars to turn about 10 degrees. Installed correctly, cleaned every once in a while..most any HS will last for a long time. I sold a bunch of these..$35, cart bearings(easy to replace), work great...and colors.
