View Full Version : A good problem..?

I'm in Dave Kirk's to-do list and I've had over six months to decide how I want my frame but I haven't decided yet, not totally anyway. Oh, what sweet torture. The "hardware" part is settled, but now I'm struggling with the cosmetics.

As the end comes near, an all too familiar feeling of despondency rears its head. I feel the same when I'm about to finish a good book, it makes me sad to know that it will end soon. When it comes to bicycles, there are all kinds of nooks and crannies to figure out and contemplate and caress, which allow for hours and days of dubious and crooked fun.

Mine won't be a Terraplane. I just can't come to grips with the way the Terraplane's seat-stays break the Idea I have in my mind of what a bicycle frame should look like. It will certainly be lugged, but I'd rather wait for the frame to be ready to indulge in describing it. Of course, the components would be a whole new book.

Thankfully, Dave is a patient and wise man. I'm so looking forward to have that baby in my grubby hands. Although often I wonder if the wait isn't the better part.

Oh, sweet remembrance. I saw Taj Mahal back in '69 at the Olympia in Paris by the side of an oh so sweet hippy girl with faraway eyes and oil of patchouli on her neck.

I've already settled for a Twiggy shouldered Cinelli fork crown with a sweet little window on the side. The double plate crown is more like Rumsfeld than Twiggy, atmo. Rock on, big guy, life is good.

I'm on the list too. While I love the design process and the fun of obsessing over every detail, I can't wait to ride it. From all the raves we have both read, I know we will be thrilled when we have the ride in hand.

BTW-I understand your view of the Terraplane, but I am going to give it a go.Hopefully, I will be glad I did at the end of every century.

Enjoy the ride. Please post pics and a ride report.

Kirks are effin sweet rides-

as far as the Terraplane stays- either you love em or you dont- but I am suprised that most people I run into on the road love em-

Terraplane or not- waiting on a Kirk is a KICK @SS problem to have-

Like I always tell people- obsess with the paint and parts for now- it makes passing the time more fun- (not really but its all you have so enjoy it) ;)

but once you ride your bike for the first time-

You'll see-

They are very much worth the wait-

At first, I wasn't sure if I could get used to the curvy stays, either, but after hearing all the ride reports from fellow Kirk owners, I gave in and ordered a Terraplane. I am SO glad I did! Did you ever read Dave Thomson's account of before/after Terraplane stays on his Kirk? The RIDE is AMAZING.

I've even heard a rumor that someone on this board who recently received his Kirk that he ordered without the Terraplane stays now wishes he'd have gone curvy after seeing even more beautiful Terraplanes posted here and hearing more accounts of the ride quality.

The look of the Terraplane stays has grown on me ever since I first took my bike out of its shipping box and ever since I saw all those beautiful Kirks at the Giro di Bozeman. The are sexy and curvy... elegant and creative. It's one of the things that sets Dave's bikes apart -- his innovation. Straight stays look so boring in comparison now. ;)

Go for it, brother. It'll make lesser minds shrink and the gods will applaud.
And go for the Terraplane too. It's so Kirk and the ride _is_ amazing. Come to the Ramble and ride mine.

I thought DK was only allowing his bikes to be painted ORANGE now -- that's what Tailwinds told me. BTW, I understand that Jan is no longer going to be riding his pink and black bike, so this color combo must be so passé :D
