a friend only has a vintage 3 speed and wants an indoor rear wheel trainer. i assume removal of the little shift chain is a must but does anybody have real world experience doing this

I'd go that route.

Remove the chain, an AW hub will go into high gear,
if it is an ancient K hub the hub will go into low gear.

Sturmeys are stamped on the shell with build year and model
89 AW or 39 FC

If the the date is pre WWII, let me know.

The usual style simply won't work. He can remove the rear wheel and put in a cheap fixie or single-speed freewheel wheel and then have regular track nuts to mount the bike on the trainer with.

Plan B: get a trainer similar to the Cateye 1000. These have a mount for the front fork and the rear wheel sits on a pair of rollers with a fan resistance unit integrated. Computrainer has a different variation on this.

Plan C: Feedback Sports trainer, which has a fork bracket up front and then a pair of rollers in back. You can have whatever gearing systems you want on that one. It's a pretty decent system for someone who isn't trying to go crazy on it.

It would work. I bet you could find one for $20. They also had fan shrouds to dull the noise ;)

Rollers with a fork stand = $$$

My buddy still has his. He rode the crap out of it. Bearings are now pretty bad and the contact roller is worn down by about 1/4 inch now. He now uses his for a work stand when cleaning his bikes.
