View Full Version : 1x9 tips -- 6500 shifter to rear MTB derailleur?

So I've got a 1x9 setup right now on a 'cross bike -- 6500 right shifter, mated to a 7700 rear derailleur and a 11-27 cassette on a 42t front ring. I want some lower gears for when I'm not doin 'cross stuff. Clearly, I could go to a 38 or something up front... but I'd lose out on some top-end.

Anyways, I've heard of being able to mate any Shimano 9 speed mtb rear derailleur and it working.

So a few questions:
1. Is that true/any experiences?
2. RD recommendations? Cassette recommendations? 11-32 would be great, 11-34 possibly...

TIA

1. True. I am using 9-speed STIs with MTB rear derail. on five bikes.

2. This is what I like and use. I have got 11-34 in the back, been in this setup for the last 6 years, works fine, zero issue.

True regarding road shifter/MTB rear der compatibility but check the rear derailleur specs to see that the derailleur can handle a 34t cog, as some of them were rated at 32t.

1. yes, any 9s rear der, MTB or road.
2. Deore is nice and inexpensive with a barrel adjuster on the der. Some of the more modern 'shadow' ones, even tho 9s, don't have this(altho Jagwire plug in ones work well).

I cant emphasize this enough - get a 10 spd drive train with an xt or xtr r.d.. The clutch in the rear derailleur's are the key - from experience. It will keep your chain snug and prevent the majority of drops.
