I only started out in this sport 7 or 8 years ago now, by way of triathlon as one of my college buddies was dipping his toe (pardon the pun) in the waters and I had to one-up him. All's well that end's well though, as my LBS then-mechanic and now-teammate turned me onto road riding and racing.

We made short order of my triathlon bike and I was firmly put on the "right" track - the track of the racer. A season or two after that, I found this place and the wonderful people here. Some of whom I've had the pleasure of meeting in person, but so many more who I just know from seeing their bikes around these parts.

My Cervelo P3 Aluminum with a quad spoke in the front and a disc in the rear made way for a Cannondale Systemsix with 82/101's which bowed out to my current ride - a Black Mountain Cycles replete with full-time fenders and a front rack. I've had close to a dozen bikes in the middle, and am currently working on a tricked-out crit specific machine, but all of this is to say - you guys have taken me in an interesting direction re: "bike tech"!

I just sent a chap in Florida money for a 93 Specialized Allez Comp - am I moving forwards or backwards??

Nice. I'd say your direction just fine.

If this is your tricked out crit bike then get a right side bar end shifter and some wheels.

Those bikes were nice. Chainrings could be thicker and the cranks thinner (I wasn't keen on the cranks back in the day) but the rest of it should be good. I love those levers.

If that's not your crit bike then enjoy as is.

I was talking to Mark about the possibility of swapping the rings, chain, rear mech. and rear wheel for a powertap so I could have power when I take this on long rides but then I remembered where I came from and where I'm going and....

Those were very good bang-for-the-buck-bikes in 1993. Still good bikes. Hopefully still a good value.

I have no clue how it would do as a crit bike (the last criterium I rode in was around 1975), but as a general rider it should put plenty of smiles on your face for the foreseeable future. I say: good score.

Those team Coarse bikes have been brewing for a while, right? Or was it another person here who was sponsored?

Yep. Deposit went out September 2015. I think it's just me here on the forum. We have 4 identical bikes (1 non team-member). Billy had some health issues this year and is now back welding. Really stoked. Missed 2016 (had a baby so I wasn't really contending anyways) but am going to tear up 2017 on this thing.

It all depends on how you answer the next question...

A) It's the bike
B) It's the "motor"

I like it.

When I am out riding I see all kinds of folks on $3-5k bikes with another $500 doing 15mph.

I would way rather spend $500 bucks all in and hammer it home.

ANAO

we ride a similar size bike, and i have lusted over many of the frames you have thrown up for sale.

my feelings on the specialized: sometimes things are greater than the sum of their parts.

or

you can't leave a ferrari in the parking lot, and you probably shouldn't get groceries in a monster truck.

A more apt metaphor is suggested by the background of your 1st photo.
You are exploring the depths... and the water's fine!

If it makes you smile when you ride, then you're going in the right direction.
(I bet it'll make you smile.)
