Looking for recommendations for a pair of 3 x 9 brifters. I have a 7703 front derailleur and crankset.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had success with any 2x left shifters that are compatible with a 3 speed front derailleur.

thanks

I would recommend Retroshift/Gevenalle. Having a friction shifter for the FD on a triple is nice.

Some shifters are 2/3 compatible and will work fine with what you have, others are double only and won't work well. Ultegra 6510 and 5510 are 2/3 compatible, Dura Ace came in double or triple varieties. Double only shifters do not have enough clicks for a triple front derailleur.

Shimergo? 11s Campy shifters supposedly work with Shimano 9, and we know that Campy front shifting is ratcheting so it'll handle the triple if your FD is a triple one.

Use a 9 speed shifter on the right and a bar end on the left. You'll appreciate the friction shifting for the triple, especially the ability to trim.

I know that Campy 8-10s left shifters are not indexed, just ratcheting (haven't dealt with 11s but my understanding is that the lefts are the same). I've used them with all sorts of front derailleurs, including a non-index compatible Shimano 600, Ultegra, etc.

Campy 10s right shifters are compatible with Shimano 9s rear, if you put the derailleur cable on the wrong side of the mounting bolt. This is the hack we used on our Shimano 3x9 tandem. Other than the Campy 10s shifters (and fit stuff like bar, stem, stoker post) the bike is completely stock.

This is a stock photo of the bike we have. I just put Campy 10s levers on it.

2009 Campag LH shifters have 7 clicks, 2008 and older had 11. That 11s LH ultrashift shifter may be able to travel far enough if the triple front der arm is long enough. 2008+ triples do but if you using a 53/39/30, the 'bumps aren't optimal for getting the chain off the 39 to the 53...designed for 52(3)/42.

If 52(3)/39, a Athena 11s triple may work.

Yes. Worked for me on a 53/39, but I had the next-to-latest (Powershift?) with the crappy plastic wheel on the inside. ... so I'll say worked for me for 2-3 years.
