I know that Dura Ace has a 12 x 28, but I'd rather not spend big bucks on a cassette. I think I can jury-rig one using an Ultegra cassette and a mix of ultegra and Dura ace individual cogs.

Does anyone know if Ultegra and Dura Ace cogs can be mixed freely on an Ultegra cassette body?

TIA for any input.

I would think you could use the 12-17 (6 cogs) from an 6800 or 5800 with the 19-28 (5 cogs on 2 carriers) from the 9000. Not sure if anyone is selling the 5 cogs separately, or if it's cost effective. The 9000 12-28 is $146 at ribble.

Miche makes 12-27 and 12-29 Shimano 11 cassettes:

BBB makes a 12-27:

I think I'd just go with a Miche. Good call on that.

There's also IRD (http://www.interlocracing.com/cassettes-freewheels/11-speed-elite-cassette-shimano-compatible) (12x30, not 12x28)
(AFAIK, Miche are all individual cogs, and these can cut more easily into the freehub. IRD uses clusters (for the lower gears), which reduce it)

All modern aluminum freehub bodies should employ a steel bite guard. No good reason not to. But, that doesn't mean it will happen.

OP here . . . thanks for the input.

The Miche looks like a viable option.

Is the Miche cassette considered a good quality item? Years ago, it was generally "B" grade stuff. I'll be using this with a Sram Etap setup.

not sure if its a viable option but a 14-28 6800 cassette exists..might be able to make it work or re configure it for 12-28? I did order one a few days ago from planet cyclery but hasn't shown up yet.may still be available on sale

Checked a gear chart and that works great. Biggest gear is around 95", but I doubt I spend more than 30 minutes a year in a gear that big or bigger . . . Thanks for the suggestion. I guess as I get older, I return to where I started, with junior gearing.

I have combined an Ultegra 11-28 with a 12-25 to make a 12-28. Worked just fine.

That's good to know. $55 at Planet Cyclery.
