After Phonak and CSC shared a hotel one night during this 93rd Tour, Zabriskie said he noticed that Landis was pacing a corridor and muttering to himself, "Got to win this bike race, got to win this bike race."

...

"I think he's a great leader," said Axel Merckx, a teammate. "He's understanding and supportive and motivating. He's not the kind of leader who's bossy.

"The bottom line is that he's a really nice person and he's the same way in his leadership."

Maybe he learned a few things from Lance after all.

I find it interesting how many former LA "Lts." go on to become well respected team leaders.

Maybe they learned how to do it right (lead by example) by watching how to do it "wrong" (be the "boss").

Just a thought.....

I'll say this for Lance's leadership . . .

It may not have endeared him to his gregarios, but he was respected, feared (tick him off and you'd be left off the tour squad, or worse) and it delivered the goods seven times over.

If I were a pro, I know who I'd rather ride for, but if I were a team manager I'm not sure what style of leader I'd hire.

Poo...

It's easy to associate Lance's abilities with either brains or leadership or Johan's "superior" management ability (or the most silly.. Bike technology). I don't buy any of it. We'll learn a lot about Lance and Johan and Chris Charmicael over the next couple years.

I think Lance is more the Michael Jordan type

Take the ball out of his hands and there's not much to Jordan but erm...

Mayb we missed the "Take the ball out of his hands" part?

Ref'ing to his career as a coach / manager / team owner.

Although watching Lance leap into the road in defense of a Disco rider would be good TV...

Bird was awesome... but the Celtics caught the rest of the league offguard with those big green clown shoes. :D
