View Full Version : Tasteful way to mount frame to wall? (Apartment Therapy meets Paceline)

Apartment therapy / Paceline mash-up!

So I have a a cool frame sitting in a box and generous wall space in my current abode.

Anyone have any tasteful ways to mount a frame/fork to a wall so I can have the frame sit (almost) flush with the wall?

There's some great ideas I found via Google with some cool, yet expensive, solutions but any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

first inclination would be to use either the dropouts or bb. these would be nearly invisible and hold the frame right up against the wall.

hardmount a couple bolts into the wall studs and modify qr skewers (with spacers inside the dropouts to keep them from flexing in) to clamp the bike
or hardmount a bolt into the wall and use a single sided bb face. this would have to be very tight tho to prevent the frame from twisting around the bb

I have a crashed NJS frame and fork mounted to my wall.
Wish I had a picture for you, but the frame is mounted via standard hooks you can buy at a hardware shop, and the fork is mounted in similar ways around the crown. It's minimal, but sometimes I fear it'll fall down in earthquake-prone California. No issues yet, but I don't mount it over a bed or something.

Another thing you can do is something like one of these two below. You can certainly make a simpler version with a bit of wood, a weekend, and a beer ;)

But I might explore some hooks at Home Depot. I like the whole whole bracket idea but something more minimal is ideal.

I can't remember exactly where I saw the mount, but I feel like they are a vendor here...Anyways use an old stem mounted to the wall and handle bars as the hook. You can even wrap the bars to protect the paint. Found the link (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=173726)!

yeah, that.

Might be able to do something with a closet rod mount to come up with that. Or, you know, if you have some aluminum bar stock and a lathe hanging around.

I have the GearUp Oak bike rack. It works great. It might be overkill for what you want to do: http://www.mygearup.com/inc/sdetail/20095___oak_ftc/89/381
They can be had for cheaper on overstock.com or similar sites.

They also make a shelf, which I bought and haven't installed. It might be more of what you are after: http://www.mygearup.com/inc/sdetail/20090___oakrak_solo_single_bike_wall_mount/402/406

I like this idea. I would explore some sort of clear Lucite solution to mount it, or a simple wooden dowel. I would want the mount to be invisible and the frame to be the focus.

I just used wood screws .. Ineligant, but clean

I like that, a good clean solution, similar to what I do...

Two hooks in the ceiling, double or quadruple up fishing line right behind the TT/HT junction and at the SS/ST junction. Cheap as heck and looks like its floating.

That's the cheapest and least impactful solution.

I'm cringing because of the lack of padding on this one...

I put mine in a frame. Had an old ugly painting in storage, covered it with fabric, and placed a few strategic screws with plastic tubing to protect the metal threads.

Tony Thom of Bicycle Odyssey in Sausalito has been doing it like this for 10+ years. He gets super ornate frames tho. He has like 12 or so on his walls like this. It's a super cool idea.

I need to paint the wall, I had the plasterer plaster over the hooks so once the wall is painted, and when the bikes aren't there the hooks will pretty much disappear.

Tickdoc - I really like what you did with the picture frame. Where/how did you screw the bike frame to the painting?

I've got an old Pinarello Prologo TT frame I'd like to hang in my office...

Thanks!!

Anyone else come up with other ideas to hang a frame up???
