Steel canti CX frames

Greetings everyone,

I wanted to build my girlfriend a real cross bike and been eyeing the new Macho Man canti frame (blue/white/black, let's say I'm not a huge fan of disc brakes).

Bought a nice Easton EC90X fork, so it does not weight 3 tons and tracks better (steel forks are cool, but rode two All-City bikes and found their front-ends too springy when it comes to off-road riding - compared to a carbon fork equipped CX bike) and ordered some other parts. Today it appeared that the european All-City distributor has no stock of that frame (size 46cm) with no supply in sight (and there are no online stores shipping it overseas, as far as I know), so I'm looking for some alternatives. Preferably steel. Surly Cross-Check is an obvious other choice, but it's :butt:-ugly. Bombtrack Arise is another (bit prettier). What else is there (except Ebay inventory)? Thanks!

Most steel CX frames tend to be disc brake nowadays.

Other option would be an "out and out" race frame as alot of those still use canti brakes.

really weird sizing, I don't understand their philosophy. I'm 5'10", and my 52 has like no headtube, and a 556mm toptube, but also gives me a lot of toe overlap that would be a problem if I rode offroad much. I use it basically as a road bike.

I'd have bought a bigger size, but reach was my problem with my last bike

I'm a bit taller, but ride a 52cm All-City bike (which has a 55mm long TT) and I also have the toe overlap issue and pretty large saddle-handlebars drop. Size larger is too tall for my short legs. Oh well.

Actually, that's why I like All-City frames - they fit wide rubber. I think BMC would be a viable alternative, but oversea shipping might be a bit too pricy.

all city is nice.. I have 2 nature boys and had a space horse. i just bought a lemond poprad i think they come in smaller sizes as well. just built it so I have no feedback yet other than a few trips up and down the driveway but it feels good with the Ritchey wcs fork and 853 reynolds frame.

Haven't personally dealt with them. Best shot would be to contact them and ask them.

I JUST went through this, literally 2 weeks ago. That black/white/blue Macho Man was calling my name.

Same experience as you, no 49's anywhere. Called All City and they recommended that I call all AC dealerships in my area and see if anyone had one in stock.

Come to find out, guy shop had a Citron Macho man frameset NOS in storage, and the price was far too good to be true. I jumped and now I am extremely happy with it.

I'll be building up a New Albion Privateer Canti Frame to go along with an All City Nature Boy fork. This is the 3rd Privateer I've built up for others wanting a do all cx type bike. I was able to get the frame for $223 (on sale if you keep your eyes open) and lucked out on getting new All City fork on Ebay for $79.
BUT I like both All City Frames and Black Mountain cycles also. You can't go wrong with either one, I only suggested Albion since I know they offer a great price point and fine ride.

Thanks for the hint and congratulations, I bet it's great :) Emailed their international (european) dealers, looking grim so far.

Brother Kepler frame also appeared on my radar, also low stock, but their smallest size looks large (top-tube wise). Anyone knows what's the standover?
