so farrrr away.

I registered for the 115k not even looking at the options. Just messaged them and switched to the 100k mystery ride.

It is kind of early for tire discussions lol but I will be on switchback hills again :P

It may very well be the one tire to rule them all.

Meh. I tried them on my NFE and thought they were sluggish. Much prefer the quick handling of the BabyShoePass on 650B wheels. I'm hoping the 26" wheels let me balance the faster handling with more float...

Isn't it nice to live in a time when we have choices?

registered 100K; since I got lost three times last year, hopefully it will be less of a mystery.

I'm signed up for the long Mystery Ride. I did it last year too, but didn't finish the whole course. Aiming for a better performance this time.

Tires will be WTB Nano Race, in 29x2.1.

certainly my favorite. I am now on babyshoe pass and thought maybe they would be better on pavement and maybe they are but in all honesty I would not mind switchbacks all the time.

well, you can always change it till the day off. Apart from the mystery rides since they are limited to a certain amount of people.

I have done the 100k and the 115k. The 115k is much harder than the 100k but I think I preferred the 100k. It was a more varied course imo, the 115k is still a great ride.

The Mystery is a 100 mile ride, just a little difference.

I am not sure how big I want to go, I am leaning towards the 160K or Mystery (100 mile)

For the last one, the organizers stressed that one should probably not undertake the mystery ride if you haven't done D2R2 yet. I'd concur with this completely. It was challenging but felt like it was challenging just for the sake of being a challenge and not really any fun. Of course you could skip some of the harder sections of the Mystery ride, but the skippable parts were some of the more fun sections, while others were just miserable.

If you're able to sustain mucho climbing up dirt & gravel for long periods, then the 180 is fine. The 160 and 115 share many of the same roads, with the 115 being shorter, but not necessarily that much easier. Still plenty of climbing there. So it's really a question of how long you want to be out there. Each ride offers beautiful terrain and plenty of climbing.

All good points. A lot will depend upon my ride in May 2017, Pittsburgh to DC down the GAP and C&O non stop. If I can finish that ride in less than 24 hours and keep my form, then I will do the mystery or 160, if not the 115.

A group of three of use will probably leave Pittsburgh around 9 pm and make it to Cumberland hopefully prior to sunrise (not a lot of GAP traffic during that time).

C&O is usually done around 15-16 mph, with the exception of the gnarly rooted sections.

The goal is to limit the amount of time off of the bike.

My wife will be providing support along the route, so we will not have to hunt for provisions.

Giving this thread a bump. The Mrs can't go this year so I am thinking about signing up for the 160 or 180k route. We did the 100k last year. We took our time and rode at a very casual pace with a fun group of forum members.
It was actually easier than I expected. Looking for more of a challenge this year.

Did the 115k yesterday, 2014 vintage. Was nice having original event cues identifying unsigned roads and other landmarks. I brought enough food which was good since no services on the route. I was able to get water at a town hall, a library, and a spring.

I did the Mystery Tour last year. As I recall, there were a couple small stores in Charlemont at about the half way point.

Nice job. I'm impressed that you brought enough food; it can get ugly out there without calories. And kudos for finding water on the route; that's what I call resourceful.

I chose the 115 due to getting a late start (Was a detour on my way driving from Portland to RI so did not start until about 10:30) and also because the route is more compact east-west wise with 112 cutting through the center of it and intersecting in a couple of places. I would not have had to go to far if I had to find something. Looking at the map now, I see a store very close to the route at the intersection of 100 and 112. I've even been to that store a few times on different rides. That is about mile 46. I started about 10 miles in, so would have only been 36 miles in. The main thing for me was water. I drank a lot early on. I had only two water bottles and I am used to three, though the fork blades on the bike actually accept water bottles. On the other hand, there are rivers and streams all over the course as a last resort.

Not dumb at all. Typically I always assume there is possibility such water has bacteria that could make you sick-giardia, etc. So only as a very last resort. I suppose on this course you are always close enough to services that you would always be able to avoid drinking surface water. On the other hand I usually trust springs.

oh YAH. Officially, we can discuss D2R2 tire choice and I love it.

I will brake the rules and start today.

Also do not know what bike I will be taking. Part of me wants to do it on a new bike, lighter bike. Hampsten Strada Bianca. Put some Gravel King SKs 32mm. Gearing is ok but not optimal for my shape right now (Compact up front with a 32T in the back).

------------ VS ----------------

My trusty Elephant NFE. A lot heavier (10lbs). I just ordered some WTB byways so the little bit of thread will be awesome. Those will be run tubeless. Gearing is awesome for this ride. 48-30 up front and 32T in the back.

The Hampsten would be awesome with 32's I'm sure. But... as nice as the Hampsten is, and as much as I'm sure you want to ride your new ride, I would vote for the NFE with the Byways. Lose the big bag and the Haulin Colin. A small bar bag (no rack) is all you need, or just small saddlebag. The Byways tubeless are awesome.

sparky33

That's a tough one.
Go with whichever bike feels best climbing.

fwiw this year I'll have tubeless 650b SBH on the FF. Overkill in a good way, and I just have to go with it. Though it is really hard to improve on a nice cx tire in Deerfield.

@sparky - the FF looks awesome, I have done with with the SBH, last year actually and it was great. Also have done it with babyshoe pass and the SBH to me are a great improvement for that ride.

Not really. I assume this will be something custom, so fit shouldn't be an issue. I would want a 20 -30 mile shake down ride just to make sure of everything, but other than that go for it.

FWIW, I rode a 200 mile ride on a Look 585 a week after I got it.

Forgot to comment on tire choice.

Last year for the 100km, tubeless 700x35 BJPs were great. There were a few gravelly hilly sections where a little more traction would've been nice, but definitely not necessary. This year (assuming I can make it), I'll be running tubeless 700x37 WTB Riddlers.

hell no, I am not doing 180 or 160. I did the 115k last year, 2 years ago I did the 100k (which I actually enjoyed more than the 115k).

This year the plan is the 100k mystery ride. I am signed up for it. If my buddy doesnt want to do it, we will either be doing the 100 or the 115.

Hoping the WTB Byways will fit, and plan to run tubeless. Will be a bit of an ordeal since they are currently mounted tubeless on another bike and will also be removing fenders.

I pre-registered for the 2017 Mystery Ride.

But last year, during a preparation ride for the 2016 Mystery Ride (some friends and I rode the 100k route in reverse), I had a serious meltdown.

As a result, I had a pacemaker implanted in November 2016.

Alas, they just can't get the thing tuned right and I can't survive riding an hour.

But I paid my money and I want my meal, dammit! And I want to check out all the cool bikes.

So I'll be there on the sidelines. You all have fun.

Also going is my GF Karen who bombed out of 100K last time w/ back issue. She says she's riding the River, but new bike and enough encouragement she may surprise us. We are all riding 25mm tires, Domane, R3, and Allez road bikes again.... We'll be sporting NJ plates on Red Subaru w roof racks. Say hello if you see us.

ROLL CALL: Who's in?

I'm in. Signed up for the 170k Mystery ride. I'm nursing an Achilles injury, so I might not end up doing the whole 170k. It'll be an on the road decision.

I'll be camping out for at least Friday night, maybe Saturday also.

For tires, I ordered Clement MSO's in 50mm. They should arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to trying them out.

Pretty new here.

Planning on doing the river ride unless my girlfriend has a change of heart about the 100K. She'll be on 28s, and I'll have on 32mm Stampede Pass. Though if the weather threatens I reserve the right to show up with my fendered, triple crankset commuter....

Went to school in Western Mass and love going back.

yeah, lets hope the rain does not screw us over. Some rain the days before not such a bad thing but the day off, would be nice to have a nice clean sunny day.

Last few times was amazing, has it ever rained during a d2r2? how was that?

Rain would pose a dilemma for us-WTB Byways and no fenders-assuming they fit- or Babyshoe pass with? Was looking forward to shedding fenders. Have become such a wimp without though.

It won't rain. From what I hear, that area has been getting all its rain out of the way in early August.

Have you folks seen the warning in the latest newsletter?

We have located a very dangerous and poisonous plant called Giant Hogweed (see photo below). Giant hogweed is an invasive plant that can cause severe burns if you come into contact with it. It has been found along the banks of the Green River in Vermont (not far from the Guilford Covered Bridge). It is a very large plant (6-15’ tall) with a hollow stem with coarse hairs, raised nodules, and often has purple blotches. The hairy leaves are very large, and if it’s blooming, has dramatic flat-topped white flowers up to 2’ in diameter. Please use caution if you plan to take a dip in the river!

This will be the 5th time for me - the plan is for the short mystery ride this year after having done the 100k, 115k, 150k (missed the turn on the climb after lunch on the 115k), 160k.

The 115k is my favorite...you get 2 of the 3 signature climbs and are back to camp in reasonable time (we go at a JRA pace) to enjoy beers and fellowship.

I heard from those who did the 100k Mystery last year that it was a lot of hike-a-bike and happy to see that Sandy & Co have altered it a bit.

My weather app is predicting "cloudy and humid with a couple showers possible" and high of 81 for Greenfield. Brattleboro is similar. Would prefer cooler and less humid but I'm fine with that. Would much prefer a couple showers to blazing sun. Also, if it's going to be humid I prefer to have clouds to mitigate.

Still, even allowing variance, heavy rain and/or steady all-day rain seem to be unlikely. Even if you look a day either side of Sat...I'm seeing possible t-storm. But t-storms are typically short and not a problem if they do not involve threatening lightening, which seems to be the case around here IME.

ROLL CALL: Who's in?

I'm in. Doing the 160K (which I've done before). Last year I tried the Mystery Ride and like many of us ended up hoofing it on foot way too much. The Specialized Crux Elite was no match for the wet/mud/boulder-strewn forest roads. Then on East Rd around mile 59, I broke a spoke and was forced to abandon.

So this year I'm looking forward to a more familiar route, one that I hope to finish!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this year, I will miss seeing many of my pals here, those that I have already met and those I haven't.

I have only done this ride twice over the years, both times the 100k and it's just the right amount of riding that I want to do for this type of terrain, I have got nothing to prove. The part that I enjoyed the most about D2R2 is the people, the camaraderie, the quiet New England roads and scenery. As such, I like to take it "slow", slow enough to smell the flowers, so to speak, stop and chat with strangers, take pictures, linger a bit at the rest stops...I mean, I have the whole day to myself, away from family, what's the rush? I stopped agonizing over my equipment - just make sure I have got low enough gears (compact, 11-34) and a decent set of tires (35mm panaracer pasela) and I am good to go.

To my pals who are doing the ride this year, have a safe ride and a blast!

Did the Mystery Ride last year and completely agree regarding the hoofing it, especially since we missed a turn and ended up climbing an extra mile up a mud wall with our bikes on our backs. Was signed up for the 180, but my ride partner and I switched down to the 100 km since we haven't had squat for training time this year.

I'm doing the 100k this year with absolutely no training so it should be quite an adventure (my two year old somehow meant almost no biking for me this year). This will be my 7th time in the last 8 years - I love it - everyone is super nice and there is a great vibe. Maybe I will see some of you this year - look for the really slow guy on an older specialized roubaix with an open pave on the front and continental four seasons on the back.

Good seeing Nick. And am looking forward to ride reno2cino with him in a few weeks. My buddy had a hell of a day and made the best of it. At mile 5 he tore his RD off his bike. He made it back to the start with the aid of others. Got a cannondale demo bike and rode it via green river to the lunch spot. From there he completed the 180k with me. The kicker was just before Patten Hill Rd he got stung by a bee on the bottom lip. He looked like he was trying to kiss me for the rest of the ride.

Great ride. Took it easy. My average HR was in the active recovery zone. What a blast.

Another year and my best ride of the year (by far, its fantastic). Again, SUPER well organized, everyone I met was awesome (did not see AngryScientist, we will meet next year Nick.). We were very in and out this year, stayed at some sketchy hotel 10 minutes from the event and then drove home after a couple of beers and food.

My buddy and I did the short mystery. 69 miles, about 6500ft of climbing. It was a really good ride. Definitely had less gravel than the 100k and 115k from what I remember but it was through some incredible roads so I really did not mind, also the gravel sections were incredible and it was the perfect amount of rolling hills with some gnarly climbs thrown in (there was only 1 really hard climb, killed me).

Was also nice to ride with a few locals and I was ridding through this grassy field and told the gentleman next to me, wow someone must have just mowed this path for use to go through it and he goes, oh yeah, I did it last week. Made my day.

That and the nice guy ridding in flip flops (no not SPD flip flops, just normal flip flops) on a nice rando bike and dude was killing it up all those hills.

My gf and I did the river ride in about as leisurely a pace as one could. It was sauna-esque in the sun but we were in the shade most of the time after mile five. All you heard was the wind and the light crunch of gravel.

We were less than an hour away from the end when I realized I should probably take a photo to remember how beautiful it is up there. Good things still exist. Will be back for a third year in 2018.

Rode the 100k last year for the first time, and rode the 160k this year. Wow, that was definitely a harder ride this year. There were a few really steep short climbs near the beginning that I considered walking but was too stubborn. Glad we picked that route, it was challenging but remained fun for the entire ride. Roads were in great shape, and I think we got real lucky with the weather.

Yay! Finished the 160k! Last year, on the Mystery Ride, I blew a spoke at mile like 59 on East Rd and that was the end of my D2R2 2016. This year I just wanted to finish, and I succeeded (with the help of 13 consecutive D2R2 veteran and informal race photographer, BB aka Wing Nut).

Terrific conditions again. Somebody pointed out earlier in this thread that there've been 13 years in a row without rain - that's an awesome streak. This year was no different. And having had the rain come through the day before to dampen all the roads and quell the dust was perfect.

Was definitely hot but not as hot as last year. The ample shade afforded plenty of relief from the sun, and the water stops were well situated. I never lacked for liquid or fuel.

As always, I wrote up my day's adventures at my blog, Shad Rides (http://shadrides.blogspot.com/). Check out Part I (http://shadrides.blogspot.com/2017/08/d2r2-2017-redemption-of-shad-part-i.html) and go from there.

Let's see...Camped, slept enough but not much. Amazing sunrise 6a start. Plugged along for the better part of the day at a brisk but measured pace. Good legs. Really humid. Pickles. Met some people for good riding company. Went to that dark miserable place. Hills felt like mountains. Got a second wind. Miraculously made it up Patten Hill. Beer. Chocolate milk x 3.
Dashed home for dinner with my girls.

Feeling shredded still.

We had a great time riding the 100k this year. Usually do the 160k, but decided to slow down and enjoy the day more. Had a fantastic time meeting and chatting with folks along the way. Got to see the covered bridge lunch scene at full swing which was also new to us. The peaches were juicy and the river was refreshing.

All hail Sandy. He's a freaking genius to be able to get that many people on those roads at once and yet it never feels crowded. A day best shared with friends for sure.

P.S. The little girl over my shoulder doesn't know what to make of her beer. Thinks the hops aftertones might be a little too forward.

I did the 100K Mystery Ride solo this year. My riding buddy Peter had to bag it unfortunately due to circumstances beyond his control. That was a shame but I pushed onward. After last year doing the long mystery ride, this particular ride I felt a new challenge brewing and I was not disappointed. Absolutely fantastic! No off the bike excursions, plenty of up and some sweet downhill sections. A superb day. As a "veteran" of this event, having done the very first edition (100k), this mystery ride evoked a very similar flavor dare I say.

Met some super nice people along the way and by the looks of it, most had as much fun as I did.

See you next year!

I'm Elmer's pal and health issues prevented me from riding D2R2 this year, but I already paid my registration...what to do?

Well, at the last minute I got the idea that while Elmer was riding, I was going to WALK a portion of the 100K standard route since I knew it by heart.

I walked through the timing chute just like any bloke on a bike, and headed off to Old Albany Road. At the end I picked up South Shelburne, walked a quarter mile or so, then picked up the return leg with Taylor Road, Hawks Road, and back to the finish.

It was 13 miles.

Definitely beat my feet, as well as the soreness from muscles unfamiliar with that distance.

What was amazing was HOW QUIET the area from Old Albany all the way to the bottom of Hawks Road was. It was another world. I saw only ONE car from the start of Old Albany to the bottom of Hawks Road.

Gearing was 1:1 with a 36 x 36 low, ran 38 compass 700 c tires. I felt comfortable, handled the downhills and up hills no problem and the discs provided great braking. It was nice weather with great gravel conditions - I do think the bike overall was overkill. That route could have been totally fine on mid reach roadie and 32 wide tires - like what Chris Bishop was riding.

was anyone else extremely disappointed to hear that merchandise got stolen from the franklin land trust's tent during the event?

who does that?!?

one thing that's amazingly awesome about the deerfield event is seeing all the cool bikes, just laying and leaning around. 15k dollar wonder bikes are seen leaning against tent stay cables all over the place, totally unattended, eye candy for sure. the trust factor of being in a safe space with other cycling nuts is a special kind of equilibrium.

i'm very sad to hear that some thievery would have gone on there, which goes against that delicate sense of mutual respect and trust.

I did not hear about that and yes that is very upsetting and really uncharacteristic of the kind of ride and people that go to this ride.

Yeah; I read that. I couldn't understand it as the demographic I assume participates in D2R2 is affluent enough that theft of merchandise wouldn't be considered.

It'll only be time before someone figures out they can pinch some of those expensive bikes leaning against the tent ropes, or left unattended on cars.

Thats kimda the punchline of this. Steal thousnads of dollars of components and frames or D2R2 t-shirts, pint glasses and coffee mugs.

what are they going to do with the shirts/mugs, ect? how are they going to re sell this stuff?

But unfortunately it is true, someone could go to D2R2 and come out with $20000 worth of bikes easily.

Yes, I was very pissed off to hear about this. I’m sure that Sandy & Mary would have GIVEN any items away if asked…

I guess now I have to add a cable lock to my D2R2 checklist…

I’m prying to the Karma-Gods on this one.
