How is the rear supposed to shift?

The down-shifts to smaller cogs work great. The up-shifts to larger cogs takes a sight over shift and if I don't get it right the chain is not centered.

This is with 105 S shifters, a M-735 long-cage RD, HG chain (old, wide), and XTR 12-32 8-speed cassette.

I previously ran most of this setup for a several weeks and then put it away for 19 years, so memory does not serve. I have been through replacing, cleaning & lubing, and adjusting and am left puzzled.

Any advice would be appreciated.

When properly adjusted and in good condition, it's supposed to shift crisply and accurately....every time.

Emergency is over. You can all go back to what you were doing.

Once more out to the garage and replaced the cable housing at the rear derailleur with a shorter piece of housing and a roll-a-ma-jig (isn't that what they were called?)
