View Full Version : Tread Cracking is this OK?

Punctured my Verdesten fortessa senso ultralight clincher today two blocks from my house. Decided to ride it very gently home flat. After patching the tube and pumping up the tire I found the tread cracking. The tire has 1050 miles on it. Should I throw it away?

Ok for what?
It would make a nice part for a slingshot.

I've ridden worse. I had a set of vredstein tires that started doing that along the tread and sidewalls with only a hundred miles. Those are trainer tires now, and decided not to buy their tires anymore.

looks like a rear tire. move it to the front, probably another 200 miles but not much. do not ride in the rain.

Can we see a profile shot before we jump to conclusions?

I have to disagree. If a tire is questionable it goes on the back where a failure will be much less likely to wipe you out. The rotation I'd suggest is worn front goes to back and the worn-out back goes to recycling.

I got Verdesten only once, actually the 1st set of clincher tires I bought, never again. They did not crack like those ones but from looking at them I was getting punctures. Trashed them after like a month, was stupid to get punctures every ride...:/

Very, very, very bad idea.

Never, ever move a tire back to front. Front to back.

Big sigh..once more, I'd suggest the best tire on the front..flat rear..really no big deal, flat front and can crashola..best tire in front.

For the OP..I'd use it..don't need a bazillion psi in the thing..as long as the casing isn't split/bulging anywhere..not uncommon. But leave it on the rear..

It depends on whether you like taking care of a flat at your convenience at home in your shop or on the roadside.....The fat lady is well into the third verse singing for that tire....

You'd rather have a tire fail on the front? I couldn't disagree with you more.

To OP, no, it's not ok. It's separation.

That tire, to the OP, is toast.

The easy way to think about it is, if your car tyre looked in a similar condition would you drive it or let your wife/partner take your kids in the car with tyres in that condition?

Toss and replace. Life is short enough already.

Bike parts are relatively cheap. It doesn't make sense to ride any part you have the slightest doubt about.

Thank you. It was on the rear and will stay on the rear. I run 110 psi on it (I weighed 141 lbs this morning). the manufacture states 115-175psi. That is crazy

care to explain. been doing this for 10 years and get equal wear on every pair.

i'd get a new tire op you'll just keep getting flats or worse.

Yeah, the psi stated on the tire is usually not a good guide (as you can see by the wire range).

A better guide is the size of the rim (23mm, 25mm, etc) and the size of the tire (23mm, 25mm, 28mm, etc). As the size if the rim/tire increase, the psi should decrease. For example, if you were running 23mm rims with 23mm tires, then 90psi would be sufficient, and could use less in the front (for 23mm with 25mm tires, 80psi)

Old P. already gave a good explanation why not to move a worn rear to the front and put a new tire in the rear.

Anyway, you'll still get equal wear if you trash a worn rear, move front to rear, and install the new tire in the front.

The tires don't wear equally, its why a cooked rear tire looks different from a cooked front with that squared off tread. That kind of wear pattern, when transferred to the front, can change how the front handles, especially when leaning it over in a corner.

And a worn front is begging for a front flat, which is the far more dangerous position than flatting the rear. You always want your best tire up front, since that's where all the control and staying-uprightness begins and ends. That's the one with the least and most consistent wear.

Safety ain't worth saving a couple bucks on tires. If you have to, go front to rear, and new tire on the front.

IMO - When in doubt replace it, lots o variables but going 45 mph down hill as a car is passing is not a time you want to be wondering if you should have replaced it. Thats my cent.:)

I changed my mind and retired the tire today and put a new one on. I like to save money just like everyone else. Tires is not a good place to save money.

Good idea. It looks squared off, too. I quit using GP4000's because I can't get 1000 miles out of them.
