I don't know if it's really necessary. I'm 6'4" and have hands big enough to pick a basketball up off a dribble. Not me. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlxsi80tTWs)
I have never needed them.

You slide it on the back of the body. Honestly I've never used them.

Total drift, but I have to:
I was 14, at the Fabulous Forum, Lakers v. Suns, and "The Hawk" drained a smooth, deep corner jumper to beat us at the buzzer. :(

Afterwards, I'm getting all kinds of autographs, and Hawkins comes out. What a nice guy! Gave me an autograph, and shook my hand: his fingers went up way past my elbow! That guy was so great, even if he was not a Laker! :D
