BB Question

Think I'll give Shimano's compact cranks a test. I'm currently using Ultegra 6600's with the external bearing BB. Is it necessary (or reccommended) to get new BB cups when changing the cranks?

No, they are the same.

Just uninstall the old crankset...2 bolts and install the new...2 bolts.

PS: The only caveat is if you are running a triple set up, then you need to remove the spacer from the non-drive side as well.
