Can anyone comment on the fine motor skills required to operate a friction shifter across 11 speeds? I'm wondering if it's just really difficult to get the RD in the proper position because of the tight spacing of the cogs and how little the RD moves b/w cogs.

it is really easy,

the diameter of the shifter drum will change the sensitivity required.

simplex shifters are small and thus require larger angle change per gear thus are less sensitive. Dia compe makes a new big drum diameter on the other end of the scale.

also, derailleurs of different types have different actuation ratios which also effects this.

I have run-
simplex shifters on 11 with campy derailleur (rotates about 180 degrees)
dia compe ene on 11 with dura ace 7703 derailleur (rotates about 120 degrees)

if you can use friction shifting with less gears you can do this.

if you have never run friction it may be hard.

both are easy

Cool, thanks! I used to have a friction setup on an 8spd and managed without problems (and my current grocery bike is 7spd friction).
