I want to install some mudguards on my rigid steel 29er. How do the Planet Bike mudguards rank? I see that they have options for plastic and aluminum. My 29er does not see trail use, just dirt road winter adventures.

I've used them with good results (26" version, Cascadia). Set up was relatively simple and no issues after initial set up.

Having said that, I only used the above set up on my cargo bike which only saw paved roads. For dirt road rides, I'd forego full-length fenders and just get some clip ons.

I assume that adequate clearance around the tires will be okay with full length mudguards, no? There is currently a lot of air around the tires so I expect to have some safe space between rubber and guard.

If you're running a suspension corrected rigid fork, then yes, you'd probably have plenty of room. But I guess I just don't see the need for full length fenders for a dirt road bike. If it's raining/snowing/muddy, it will clog up. If dry, what's the point?

In the past, I've made my own clip on fenders from the many (worthless) campaign signs. Cut, poke a couple of holes and zip tie.

Planet Bike makes fine mudguards.
I have used them in all sorts of foul winter conditions, nary a problem.
