Looking for a decent, relatively cheap (<$500) disc wheel set for the winter. Are there any that stand out among Shimano-compatible wheels? Factory- or hand-built is fine. Thanks

Kinesis has a Crosslight CX wheelset and Giepiemme has the Magma Ultralight Aluminium (from Planet X). Fulcrum has the Racing 5 LG Disc too. Not many options in the <1800g, <$500 bracket in my opinion. The toughest part is finding a disc wheelset that has axle compatibility...

+1 on the Kinesis Crosslight CX wheels. It ticks all the boxes for less than $400 shipped: 11sp, centerlock, tubeless, interchangeable end caps (F: 12mm, 15mm and QR. R: 12mm and QR), and ~1600-1640g depending on which of those end caps you use.

I've been riding my pair of the V4 model since they came out last October and haven't had any major issues issues. The only minor issues are the QR ends need this type (http://www.jensonusa.com/!0G5U2S5eTKwBB6wi5eYRUg!/Shimano-HB20-1520mm-Rotor-Lockring?utm_source=FRGL&utm_medium=organic&pt_source=googleads&pt_medium=cpc&pt_campaign=shopping_us&pt_keyword=&gclid=CLGFqtjVzs8CFYxZhgodcWIEdA) of lockring and they can be a bit stubborn getting tires off.

Been looking also. One option I considered was DT Swiss R23.

Ultimately went with Boyd's new center lock hub/build. It is over the $500 line.

if you don't need 11s, there is a whole world of great mtb wheels out there...for WAY less than $500. like, WAY less. and even then, anything DT-based. check out merlins selection.

when I replaced the wheels on my MTB, I looked up how much I could get for the Shimano SLX on ebay. New ones were going for right around $200. Keeping them for that kind of money. If you want TA front/QR rear, the selection of cheap wheels is better.
