View Full Version : Steel with some clearance

Currently on the look for a steel road frame with a bit clearance for some larger rubber. I've got my eyes on a Ritchey Road Logic but wanted to see if there were similar bikes out there that are somewhat similar.

So far I've only come across the Lemond Buenos Aires, which obviously can't match the performance of the Ritchey but can clear 30s.

Any other production frames I should be looking out for?

New? Used?
How high performance?

I know a lot of folks happy with black mountains and all city bikes.

There's always the bdb bikes as well

Great call on Black Mountain and All City.

Looking for both new and used. Looking for some performance as I still want to use it on group road rides.

Thanks for your help!

Love the Black Mtn, I have 28s on mine with plenty of room... I could get fenders on there no problem as is and fit 32s without...

Gunnars are nice as well, but hard to beat the price of the Black Mtn... plus, Mike has an awesome paint option this round... :)

I have a Poprad disc in 56cm I'll be listing soon if that's of interest.

I just need to find time to break it down.

I've been busy catching this fantastic blast of Bay Area weather.

Going to have to take a long hard look at this one. Any idea what tubing is used on the frame?

i have both the black mountain and a gunnar sport. both excellent bikes and great value for what you get. both fit 32's no problem. the gunnar has a significantly nicer fork and is a bit lighter overall. if you were looking to build out a really nice steel performance machine, a black mountain frame with a different carbon fork would be pretty awesome.

FWIW, this built out to right 22# without any thought to weight when I built it... only difference from pic is a Brooks Cambium... wheels are stout-built Open Pros...

Some Della Santas, while not production framesets, can take a pretty wide tire.

My son's sports 700x30 Strada Biancas atm.

The Lemond Washoe can take a pretty wide tire as well.

BMC Road is hard to beat. The geometry is very similar to my old RB-1. This one (without the Brooks) is 21 lb. Plenty of tire clearance. Mine has 32's and you might be able to use 35's.

My All-City Mr Pink clears 28s with fenders and 32s without fenders. Mine weighs in at 20lbs with my aluminum clinchers and 19lbs with my zipp tubulars. Uses Columbus Zona tubing.

Another happy Black Mountain Road owner. I've spec'd this out especially for riding in the northern part of the Catskills, where we spend a lot of weekends. So 11x32 gearing, 700x28s, SPD pedals etc. help with poor condition roads, light gravel and steep climbs. Build is a mix of Ultegra/105 11 speed, Tektro R539s, Fulcrum 5 LGs, Panaracer Gravel Kings 700x28, Ritchey cockpit and Fabric Scoop - weighs about 21 lbs even.

Some of Rivendell's offerings like Rambouillet, Romulus, Roadeo, etc. An Atlantis or Allrounder will take huge tires but they are built for on/off road rides and touring so they are probably heavier than you want.

I was going to mention the Rivendell Roadeo. It is the least off-road bike they make, but it will clear at least a 32cm wide tire. I've never ridden one, so I can't offer any insight into the ride characteristics. But it has the tire (and fender) clearance you're after and may be just what you are looking for.

Mr. Pink is a really solid bet if you are looking to ride a new, complete bike off the showroom floor.

Black Mountain and Gunnar are also nice if you are wanting to build up from a frameset.

not sure on Gunnar, but you can get a Black Mtn complete for a pretty reasonable price... 105 build for $2100 or Rival 22 build for $2235... there are other options as well... and I guarantee the build quality will be top notch by Mike himself...

I just bought a granville built by timto who is a forum member here. It has clearance for 32 or 25s with fenders. His work looks great and his prices are very reasonable. Certainly worth a look!

Lots of tire clearance front and back. It's currently set up with Clement MSO 700x32s but I'm looking at putting the trainer wheels back on it and getting it set up on the Computrainer for the winter.

I'd love a new orange one but this one does the trick so no new BMC for me.

From what I've read on the current Ritchey Road Logic, tire clearance isn't all that great. Some 28s fit and some do not. If you really want clearance, I would look for something spec'd with at least 30-32c clearance and either long reach brakes or discs. I think the Black Mountain Cycles Road frame and the All City Mr Pink are excellent options.

I've not owned one, but Surly Pacer is another option. Bit heavier than other frames mentioned, but you can find them for cheaper.

Soma ES yet another option.

The last few years on Buenos Aires steel frames were really nice. I sold a ton of those back when.

Yeah, there was a thread somewhere (I think on another site) with owners complaining that various 28s didn't fit. That was enough to rule it out for me.

Found the thread I was referring to (discussion of tire clearance starts on page 5): http://forums.roadbikereview.com/ritchey/new-ritchey-road-logic-274352-5.html

Yeah. Couldn't help thinking that a steel Hampsten Strada Bianca would fit the bill perfectly. It would also cost a few bills...

But it would be perfect.

What else is the build on there? I'm kind of amazed how much lighter that is than my Space Horse.. I have Rival 10 on mine with the exception of a Rival 22 crankset. Stock wheels and my bike comes out more like 25-26lbs with 38c tires. Could just be the grade of steel used as the Space Horse is built for a ton of weight though. I thought the Mr. Pink had a pretty high weight carrying capacity too. (Space Horse says only 50lbs of luggage but that 50ls allows for the rider to weight 300lbs too so most of us could probably go a bit over on the luggage if needed... 350lbs is enough for 2 of me to ride the bike if there was no luggage) The stock all city wheels are very heavy too though.

Definitely keeping my eyes open for frames on here. This has been incredibly helpful. Thanks to all.
