View Full Version : What would you do? BB30 vs GXP with CX1

Frame has BB30 bottom bracket and is english threaded threaded. I want to run SRAM force CX1 crank which come in BB30 and GXP. Is it possible to run the BB30 crank with a threaded bottom bracket? I'm reading a lot of confusing things about spindle length and such.

Edit: Is it possible that there is a threaded adapter in there?

Sounds like there is already a threaded adapter in there. I have a CX9 and as far as I know they are all BB30.

Your options are:

1. Use a Sram BB30 bottom bracket and get the BB30 CX1 cranks.

2. Use the praxis GXP BB30 conversion bottom bracket and GXP cranks. I use the same adapter, but the shimano version on my CX9 and it works pretty well. https://www.praxiscycles.com/product/conv-bb-sramgxp-isis-2/

3. Use the threaded adapter that's already in there? Doesn't sound like a great option...these are known to be a little creaky depending on the model.

Thanks, did some research today and contacted the seller. Turns out no threaded adapter in there straight BB30. Going with the BB30 CX1 and SRAM BB here:

Edit again. Frame arrived with the threaded adapter pressed in after all. What would you do? I already have the BB30 CX1 crankset. Haven't ordered the bottom bracket yet.

Option 1:Take out the adapter and run PF30

Option 2: Leave the adapter in and pick up a GXP crankset/threaded cups

Sounds cheaper to remove the adapter and run what you have.

Wonder how hard that adapter is to remove...

This is my main concern.

I'd imagine a local shop could pull it out for fairly cheap.

If it's anything like my CAAD9 with a threaded adapter inside a BB30 shell, that adapter is not meant to come out. I'd avoid trying to remove it unless the original installer tells you how to do so AND that it will not damage the bb30 tolerances if you do so.

Depends on how much loctitie they used when the adapter was pressed in. I have seen one come loose and one that didn't. Maybe a full-time wrench will chime in and give you the low down on if it is worth it to try and remove it.

Personally BB30 sucks and on a cross bike it really sucks PF30 not much better. I would get a shimano Hollowtech BB and a SLX 1x crankset and sell the BB30 crankset

One of my bikes (a CAAD 10) is BB30 with a pressed in threaded adaptor in there. Works great....silent. No creaks if installed correctly. Can use any crankset I want as long as cups screw into the adaptor. Some call this backward....but I wanted to be able to use any crankset I wanted to use. I put it into the frame new. BTW....it added about 50 grams to frame to make it basically a threaded BB.

I think it sucks to have to sell or trade the BB30 crank for a GXP version, but I believe that's what I'd do.

Is your crankset the Force CX1? Check the spindle length. If it is longer than BB30 standard like the Force 22 crankset, you can just get FSA MegaEvo BB cups and keep your crank.

These cranks are usually run with a ~10mm NDS spacer on BB30 frames.

I really like the stiffness of the BB30. Definitely feels a difference.

BB30 it is. Keeping this crank, just ordered the Mega EVO BB. Thanks again PL!

Mega EVO, not Exo.

Exo is for 24mm spindles. Evo for 30mm.

There is a tool you use with a headset press to push those suckers out. It isn't hard to do with the tool, but may require some heat to soften the loctite bond first. I've done a few and have the tool... though I'm not local enough to help. Any decent shop should also be able to do it.

Agreed. I have a CX9 (luckily praxis was already installed when I bought it). But I'm also working on a Mr. Pink and wondering quite what to do with the BB30 cups already in there.

The plastic cups are easier to get out than that threaded adapter right?

I have GXP cranks and would love to put a praxis in there.

I have GXP cranks and would love to put a praxis in there.mr pink is pf30, not bb30. bb30 has no cups, just a split ring installed into the shell and a bearing pressed against it, on each side. pf30 is better than bb30, but still sucky. the cups are also super easy to get out. personally, I'd recommend popping them out and going with praxis or wheels manufacturing pf30 to gxp adaptor. (I have one of the latter I can sell you, actually, if you're interested.)

Just bear in mind that a PF30 frame is different than a BB30 frame. A PF30 frame has a larger diameter BB shell, by about 4mm, than a BB30 frame's BB shell. A PF30 adapter wouldn't work in a BB30 frame, and visa-versa.
