Took our first trip ti HH in July, and brought my road bike thinking I would do some riding. Don't bother. Lots of trails for beach cruisers, but traffic/roads are such that serious road riding is not an option (for my tastes anyway).

Rent a beach cruiser. Ride the beach, north to south and then south to north. About 24 odd miles roundtrip, 12 of which (north --> south, most days) will be into a headwind. It's one of my favorite things to do on HHI.

Own timeshare on HH. There was a bike tri shop near Sea Pines Circle that sponsored vigorous group rides. On Sea Pines plantation the police forced me to ride on bike paths if one paralleled the street. So the advice to do the beach on a cruiser is sound and trash a rental. Following that, enjoy a cold beer.
