Hey folks - just finishing build of an (early 90s?) Legend Ti. Would love to know what year it was made. Catologs seem to only get me so far.

Serial: CTI 51 3136
F1 fork with 1"steerer
Got it with a Serotta Ti quill stem 90 degree (wish it were coventional rise, but ok)
Derailleur braze ons on head tube (got an issue with these I'll make a separate post for, but will describe below)
Top tube labeled Legend Ti, not just Ti
What I think is called "sizzler" paint scheme, Pearl white and color changing frost blue (that's what it looks like to me)

can't seem to post pics, sorry.

Dang

I thought our buddy had a new GF!

There is a sticky for decoding serial numbers and a section with catalogs

They should help

If you look in the catalogs to see when F1 was dropped that would give you an idea of how new the bike could be. Also search our archives for "Legend" "Legend ti" etc. for old posts where members have listed known dates with serial numbers. Maybe one of the ex-Serotta builders could make an educated guess especially if you post photos showing dropouts and other details.

The style of rear dropouts will help you date your frame too. The earliest Ti Serottas did not have the 3D dropouts - up to the late 90's. The earliest Ti 3D dropouts (around the year 2000) had very small holes in the sections that join to the seat stays and chain stays, the later ones (around 2001? and later) have very large holes in those areas.

My 99 concours has 3d dropouts and f1 forks were around mid to late 90's as far as I remember. I also believe that cti was the concours, but I could be wrong. Does the sticker for the tubing say it's c3s or c4s ti?

F1 was available through 2002 I think. DT shifter bosses or HT stops? They went to HT stops in 1997 I think.

If only I could get my pics to upload ...
I can find where the F1 began in the catalogs but not where they cut it off.

HT stops.
Thought that transition was later?

I had a 2001 Legend with 3D rear dropouts, head tube cable stops and a 1" threadless F1 Ti (dropouts) fork.

I'd say the holes in the dropouts are small - you MIGHT be able to slip a coat hanger or a chain rivet through there - maybe two millimeters?

Does anyone know when they stopped supplying the threaded forks ? Mine is threaded. Looks from the catalogs that it was about 2002-3? But if a threaded fork was always an option, then that doesn't help to date it.

think you're right - beginning to think it's about an 02-03.

C4s ti
It looks to be a late 90's to me with the 1" head tube and cable stop placement. Could be a 2000 as well, but I'm pretty sure they went to 1 1/8" head tube as early as 01.
Beautiful bike and certainly a worthy road machine!

Thanks - think you're right. Between catalogs and what I've gotten here on the forums, I'm being on 2000. Kind of glad it's not made a year later - I'm partial to a threaded quill setup. Very eager to ride it. Thanks for the compliment on the bike - pic doesn't do the finish justice, and it's almost mint.

Search this forum to see if there were any issues with the Serotta Ti stem.

Nice bike.

You could still (for certain, it's in the catalog) get a 1" HT on a Legend in 2001. I'm not sure about 2002, but my Concours is a 2002 and came with a 1" F1. I'd guess if you wanted a Legend with an F1 in 2002 they would build you one. 1 1/8" HT was optional on the Legend in 2001.

Those are the small hole 3D dropouts. I would say your bike is a 2000 or maybe a 1999 model.

If you look on PDF pages 9 and 10 of the 1999 Serotta catalog, you'll see a picture of the Legend on page 9, it has rear dropouts that aren't 3D and it is labeled as "Ti" on the top tube. The Concours is pictured on page 10, it has your dropouts and is labeled as "CTI" on the top tube. So it looks like 99 was the year they changed over, maybe the catalog was produced before they had a Legend with 3D dropouts, but the top tube isn't labeled "Legend Ti."

On PDF page 2 of the 2000 Catalog, you can see a whole pile of the small hole 3D dropouts. On PDF page 16 of that catalog, you can (barely) see the top tube decal says "Legend Ti."

When you get to PDF page 14 of the 2001 catalog, you can see that the holes in the 3D dropout are much larger, and they are now referred to as the "3D XL" dropout. PDF page 16 of the 2001 catalog has a picture of the Concours and another picture of the 3D XL dropout.

PDF page refers to the number in the header of the open PDF file, not the actual catalog page number by the way.

Thanks so much, man - 99% convinced it's a 2000.

I've been waiting patiently for someone else to post this, but since no one has:

To the OP: No, I've been sworn to secrecy and will give you neither Bo Derek nor Christie Brinkley's phone number.
