View Full Version : Help me with Autumn-inspired frame paint jobs...

I am really into Fall/Autumn. Weird, I know, since I live in Southern California.

My Moth Attack cross bike is currently undergoing fabrication, and so I am thinking about paint. I'm considering doing something that is inspired by Fall foliage, Autumn light, Halloween, Pumpkins, Maple, stuff like that.

I am the worst person in the world at this kind of thing. Anyone have any ideas, or better yet pictures/examples of, based around a Fall-inspired-themed paint job on a frame? I figured it was worth a shot to ask all of you.

Thanks in advance.

This one for some reason reminds me of fall, not in the traditional sense, but it does anyway.

Seasonally sublime this pink/red ciocc is. It changes on the light. Sometimes looks a dark red, sometimes look a bright pink, and damn near glows in dusk or dawn light.

fwiw, when it came time to choose paint for my Sachs I sent Richie & JB a list of ...not colors, but words/flavors/concepts that I hoped would evince the look I was aiming for. A lot of the words were foods. Some of them referred to a location, or a time of day, or a naturally occurring element...

One of the words was "Autumnal"

They came back with this

...which imho hit the nail squarely on the head.

Give him a call and tell him you want the autumn leaves treatment!
...I had to repaint mine because of a RD mishap...
The autumn leaves are the quintessential paint job imho
And I have to say I miss it...

I would go less literal and, as suggested above, go with something like this background

I am not the original owner, so I am not sure whether the frame color was autumn inspired.
Anyway, I did take this picture last weekend because of how the green/yellow/gold matches the late summer flora here in the Midwest.

LOVE those Lombardia posters as inspiration.
Can someone do a series of classic cycling poster inspired paint jobs please?

But to the OP: Do you want tighter creative control over the design, or more of a "here's my inspiration and some restrictions, call me when it's done" experience? I imagine different painters will work different ways, so may need to find out who best fits your style!

the Lombardia posters are starting to hit it on the head.
the Kirk Paint job is cool but yes I was definitely looking more for inspiration than the direct reference...

Keep those ideas coming...

"Here's my inspiration." I literally don't even want to know what the bike looks like until I get it. I may send a couple of those posters for the inspiration...

Exactly.
Most of those backgrounds (not the last 2, so much) would be very open to various interpretations and still stay within the theme,

The great technical skill exhibited on that Kirk is apparent, but the design itself is just too "one-way" for me.

Good, and glad to help.
I was hoping that one of those might grab you and get your ideas going, since obviously nobody but you and your painter can actually think up your specific design.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I do think subtlety and abstraction are good starting points.
KISS, etc. :)

That's fantastic, the surprise aspect.

I still have the files I cropped and re-sized on my desktop, so PM me (anyone) with an email address if you would like me to send them to you.

I guess that, by the time any one (or more) of those images is re-interpreted and applied to a bicycle frame, copyright issues would no longer apply?

Don't know if my Landshark is Autumn inspired or some other season. Maybe Winter in California ? Spring in Oregon ?

I've got an end of summer inspired paint that hopefully I'll get to see revealed in the next few days... Will share it when I can

An orange-red Sachs? Or salmon? Got any other photos? This one is a bit difficult to fully appreciate because the entire photo looks a bit desaturated, so my eyes deceive and the frame just appears like a "regular" red Sachs. Would like to see the full depth of the color!

Here are some pics Richie sent me as teasers before I received the bike:

I realize this may not be what you are asking for but this picture has been one of my all-time favorite "wallpaper" used on my computer and my phone for a long time. I just like the "Fall" background so much and how it actually accentuates the beauty of this Zanc.

I like the Lombardia tie in, with a warm color pallete like the poster.

Even put in the the tag line of the race, in a subtle spot. Would be pure class, and have that added element of meaning. Honestly, that added meaning is (for me anyway) a lot of the value in getting a custom frame. And, I'm sure you'd smile every time that race came around each year.

The website raises different opinions at times, but John Watson's own Crema (via The Radavist (http://theradavist.com/2016/08/my-agave-marginata-crema-duo-cross-bike/#1)) has a beautiful paint scheme. If it were me, personally, I'd go with a similar design but in cream/red/orange/brown colors instead:
