Anyone out there use something other than the $40 tool from white industries to remove eno/vbc chainrings? If so what?

I'm thinking there might be another tool or set of tools that I already have other than a drift and hammer...suggestions. :hello:

you can just use a regular hook/spanner lockring tool. It even says it on the instructions. Thats how I installed mine and didn't think twice about it.

Removal should be the same, though maybe more difficult.

Won't any fixed gear lockring hook spanner work?

I'm guessing you don't mess around with cup and cone BBs, eh? ;)

I tried with just a normal lockring tool and it would not come out (it was bought from someone so who knows how much torque he put in it), it also messed up the lockring a little bit.

I then purchased the overpriced tool bit and it came out in 10 seconds. YMVV

I thought the spanner looked too wide. Maybe combining it with another tool. I'll have to give everything a closer look...instructions included.

I have, but try not to!

I used a lockring tool (thicker than standard hook spanner) with an 1/8" chain whip on the other end to remove and install what I was told was a White Industries lockring for years without issue. I just looked and I don't see said lockring on their site, but it looks just like the lock ring that secures the outer chainring on the VBC crank.

Edit: White Ind. themselves give you your answer. And HCW-5 is under $15.http://0104.nccdn.net/1_5/300/188/182/Crank_Installation_Instructions.pdf

I've used Hozan lock ring plyers with great success

normal (fixed gear) lockring tool works with eno rings but you cant get it on there with vbc rings installed (unless you remove the little ring).

Just thought I’d bump this and save people some money. Don’t buy the HCW-5 for the ENO/VBC lockring. Doesn’t work. It’s the same tool they (WI) suggest for their B.B. install. Maybe it works on that, but definitely not the ENO crank lock ring. Doesn’t work with the HCW-17 either.

Just saved you $15. Now go buy the WI tool at a $15 discount.
