This is off topic and last minute, but I'm trying to put together a quick weekend camping trip that's within about 3 hours from Boston. I've got a friend who I'd like to teach to fly-fish, so some place where we could camp, fish, and do some hiking would be great.

I'll do some more looking later tonight, but I thought I'd ask around here first :)

Thanks!

There are several places with great trout fishing along the Farmington River in CT. Call Grady at Up Country Sportfishing in Pine Meadow, phone (860) 379-1952. Good luck...!!

Here's some links to NH. Anywhere in the White Mtns is great for hiking.

I'll second NH. Are you interested in salt water as well as fresh?

Manchester VT. is 3:20 from Boston and the home of Orvis. I think the folks at Orvis can direct you to some good fishing.

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions.

I've been out to the Orvis hq and fished the battenkill and am hoping to go back this fall.

I'm thinking now, perhaps camping at Franconia Notch SP and trying to fish the Saco river. Any experiences here?

thanks!

Lots of nice hiking at Franconia Notch, but this one is especially nice. I would go up the falling waters trail and then back down greenleaf and the bridle path.

I am no help on the fishing part.

(Franconia Ridge Loop)
This is a classic, the views along the ridge are spectacular if the weather cooperates. It is done in either direction, using the Old Bridle Path, Greenleaf, Franconia Ridge and Falling Waters trails (lp: 8.9 miles, 3,900 feet, 6:25). About 2 miles of this is above treeline, you get great views but are exposed to the weather.

To summarize, here are the distances, elevation gains and book times of the various possible routes to the Mount Lafayette and Mount Lincoln:

Routes to Mount Lafayette and Mount Lincoln Route Distance Elevation Gain Book Time
Mt. Lafayette by Old Bridle Path 8.0 3,600 5:50
Mt. Lafayette by Greenleaf 7.6 3,500 5:25
Mt. Lafayette by Skookumchuck 10.2 3,550 6:50
Mt. Lincoln by Falling Waters 7.8 3,400 5:35
Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Lafayette 8.9 3,900 6:25
