Since my Zullo did not garner much interest, I decided to make it a single/fixed gear bike. I have installed Centaur SQ. Taper BB and Record Ultra Torque BB cups in the BB w/o any issues and they worked great and the crank arms were centered. This is a Sq. Taper Shimano 107mm BB and the crank arms are not centered, the DS is 4 mm further out than the NDS. The DS cup has a shoulder on it and it won't go in any further. The chainline as expected is also off.

Any thoughts other than don't use Shimano on an Italian bike

The BB is a UN-55 70 mm with superior Italian threading. ;)

Any recommendations for a different BB, maybe a 103 mm that does not cost an arm and a leg - JIS taper.

Thanks,
Jeff

Is the UN-55 symmetrical? I think you need a symmetrical BB, generally 107 for non 120mm rear ends. 103 for those.

Plus I'm not sure the Alize is JIS....somebody will know.

I tried to figure it out, but wasn't able to. Couldn't find anything about the Alize, but I would imagine that their BB's would work for that crank.

As potato says, the problem is not the BB you put in there, the problem is that the crankset doesnt match the BB you put in there.

Probably a symmetric BB will work just fine, but so far that one you have in there probably is not symmetric, easy to find out, take the cranks off and measure the lenght of the axle at both sides, from looking at them you will notice the difference IMO.

Here you have more info about the crankset and the matching BB.

JIS, need a symmetric one..TA one or Phil..probably 107mm I'd guess.

As near as I can tell it is symmetrical:
From the outside of the NDS cup to the end of the axle it measures 19mm
From the inside of the DS cup shoulder to the end of the axle it measures 19.5mm - these measurements would also be the same as from the BB shell to the end of the axle assuming the NDS cup sits flush with the BB shell.

I am really confused since the BB on T.A.'s site say they are ISO taper.

Tom (thwart) is pretty certain the Alize is JIS.

I am going to call Peter White and ask him.

Thanks,
Jeff

I believe that of all the UN-55s Shimano makes, only two or three lengths are asymmetrical.

I would probably try a 103mm JIS. $36. (http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/bottom-brackets/italian-thread-bb.html)
