View Full Version : Pump head upgrade?

I have a 10 year old Serfas FP-200 that has been reliable and maintenance free for that entire time span. Sadly, after all that great service, the seal in the head is finally giving out and it only seats properly about 30% of the time. And I have to work at it to get that.

So - I need a new pump head. The direct replacement is $10-ish from a few different places which seems reasonable. Question is, is it worth getting a "better" head if I'm going to replace it anyway? The birzman ones look nice, as do the options from Lezyne but I've heard of reliability issues with those. Can't justify going super fancy like silica or the Japanese ones. For the price of one of those I'd just get a whole new pump. But I can live with a $25-35 head if it really is that much better than the standard one.

My Lezyne Floor Drive with a Tanaka (Hirame copy) head is the business. Love it.

My LBS gave me this Bontrager (http://www.primeauvelo.com/en/pump-part-pump-head-auto-select-with-hose-4172-0008767.html), the hose is super long which is great, and I've had zero issues with it on both presta and schraeder valves. Fit on my Topeak super easy; I don't think I even needed a clamp for the hose to fit.

this has been discussed quite a bit in the past. IMO, the Tanaka is a great pump head, and I personally also have no problem with the screw on lezyne head either.

Tanaka is nice, but not going to spend $50 for just a head. Wondering if the options in the $25-35 range - birzman and lezyne come to mind as they key players in that market are worth the cash, or if I should just get a like replacement for the $10 and move on.

See the other thread about NOS Silca pump. Get the Silca combo Schroeder/presta head, a wee hose clamp and bobs yer uncle.

I converted all my floor pumps to the Blackburn Anyvalve head. The screw-on head my Lezyne came with was garbage, my old Blackburn head was worn out, and my new Blackburn came with one. It's cheap and it works great.

I've got an old Serfas pump. I replace the head every couple of years. Serfas sells direct for a few bucks:

When I first replaced the head they were free then they started charging (no problem). I think I bought half a dozen last time I ordered for a couple of $ each. If your first one lasted 10 years, I'd personally replace it with another Serfas.

I am using this one and it has been great. The old Lezynes were garbage. Just follow the instructions.

My experience is they replace the pump for free.

I've been pretty happy with this one after supporting it on kickstarter:
