Interesting, definitely sounds like it will be broader application than just the bicycle industry (which is good/broader business). Wish him luck and success.

Kathy and Greg deserve all the success and fun they're seemingly having. Its a real treat to watch from afar. Poetic justice.

Huh?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Club

Entrepreneur Tim Blixseth purchased approximately 100,000 acres of timberland, partly in purchases from Plum Creek Timber and engaged in swaps of land with the U.S. Forest Service and the Federal Government ("Gallatin Land Exchanges"). [1] [2] This land swap process was enabled by two specialized acts of Congress in the 1990s.[3] Blixseth ultimately ended up with a large amount of developable land adjacent to the Big Sky Resort in Montana. [4] The Yellowstone Club private ski resort was developed by Blixseth and used as collateral for a $375 million syndicated loan where the proceeds were used for other purposes, including an effort to build an exclusive luxury vacation club based on acquiring resort properties around the world. This venture failed, Mr. Blixseth and his wife divorced and the Yellowstone Club entered bankruptcy in November 2008. [4]

During its peak season, almost 650 people are employed at the club.[5]

The club was featured on CNBC's lifestyle show High Net Worth with Tyler Mathisen.

Cyclist Greg LeMond, an early investor and homeowner/member, sued the club in 2006, saying club founder Tim Blixseth and his former wife Edra Denise (Crocker) Blixseth had borrowed $375 million from Credit Suisse Group and took $209 million for themselves as a dividend, jilting him and other investors. The suit was settled in 2008 for $39.5 million.[6] Ms. Blixseth eventually agreed to pay Mr. LeMond and others a $21.5 million settlement; she paid only $8 million of that amount and Mr. LeMond and others joined the group of her creditors in her personal bankruptcy.[7]

i don't understand what the issue is with lemond. was the comment by buzz intended to point out flaws in lemond's biz tactic in that situation?

from the looks of that snippet posted, it sounds like he preemptively sued, tying up blixeth and credit suisse before credit suisse took it all and left everyone, including lemond, holding a musette bag full of nothing. that was a smart move. otherwise lemond & investors would have had nothing. it was 2008, and you can bet that loan was undercollateralized and not heading in the right direction.

I wish him good fortune but Greg has a history of raining on his own parade.

Carbon Fiber produced in the USA using 60% less energy will only be 5X more expensive than similar quality asian CF instead of 10X.

"Please tell me you have something more."

The other part of the Yellowstone Club story that I find interesting is that things are now going very well up there. I know a bunch of people that are either employed part or full time via what's going on there - construction, security, and ski patrol type jobs.

Frankly I think it's kind of nice that the ultra-rich have their own little play area. I don't see them and don't run into them. This is compared to the Sunnyvale-Palo Alto area where there is an extreme overabundance of entitled folks sharing the same parks, roads, etc.

As far as Lemond - I hope it works out, but he's going to have a hard time competing against other companies elsewhere in the world (as has already been noted).

I wish him well...

Greg doesn't seem to have the best luck in business. Or, maybe he lacks the necessary business acumen. More often that not, his endeavors seem to end up with a lawsuit.

Mercury-Viatel/Fuji fiasco? His father? Trek? Yellowstone?

Hope he just lets them use his name for notoriety and doesn't try to run the business.

Don't understand the poetic justice.

I never thought fun was in Kathy's vocabulary.

I hate to take this farther off-topic but I have to ask, and not in a sarcastic way-What happens when there's an "overabundance of entitled folks sharing the same parks, roads, etc." I mean; is there a conflict between them and us? I suppose there could be; I just haven't experienced it.

I don't know Lemond personally but he was watching a carbon fiber clip very intently at the 2010 Interbike. I think it was Time's booth, where they talk about how they weave their own tubes. Or is that Look? At any rate he was raving about it with his son. He was really enthusiastic about being able to control the weave/layup/whatever instead of buying pre-made tubing. This move seems to be right in line with that conversation.

Lemond had Time make carbon frames under his name quite recently. I don't think they sold very well. Hope this endeavor works out better.

Just people acting entitled, mostly in small ways. Big ways would be forming private clubs with restricted membership (gun, golf, fishing). Small ways would be attitudes towards folks working in service jobs, driving behavior, etc. It could all be just my perception, but that's how I see it. I'll simply say that I prefer the way that things are in Bozeman to the way things are in Silicon Valley, and the people are a very big part of that. I'd try to explain it better than that, but I can't think of a more concise way to put it.

Isn't your view of entitlement a right? Freedom of association? I'm not welcome at my gun club wearing Assos bibs.

Col. Jessep: I would appreciate it if he would address me as "Colonel" or "Sir." I believe I've earned it.
Judge Randolph: Defense counsel will address the witness as "Colonel" or "Sir."
Col. Jessep: [to Judge] I don't know what the hell kind of unit you're running here.
Judge Randolph: And the witness will address this court as "Judge" or "Your Honor." I'm quite certain I've earned it. Take your seat, Colonel.

so was this thread about Lemond bikes or greg's business acumen? i forgot..... hope the bike are better than the limited LOOK models. it's about composites so i'm going to assume he's/company will be building more than the limited market of bike frames, bike parts. lots of luck to him.

What was wrong with these? They may not have been a market success, but I never heard anything negative about the bikes themselves.

If he built a decently light carbon racing bike with his typical geometry and it took a 32 mm tire (28 mm GP4000 or 28 mm Corsa G+), I'd be interested at a reasonable price point.
