I have an Oster Classic 76 that's a few years old. It does many things well and will probably last forever, but I was curious if folks could recommend a different clipper that was a) lighter and smaller, and if possible, b) cordless?

The Oster is good if my wife is cutting my hair (though she does wish it was lighter). But when I use the Oster on my own head, its size and weight makes it a bit awkward to use. Is there a clipper that cuts as well and as closely as the Classic does (I use the shortest/closest buzz cut), but that's easier to maneuver across your head? As I said, cordless would be a plus, but I'd go corded if it was light and cut well. Thanks!

A battery-operated trimmer is largely useless for cutting hair. Wahl or Oster, but net net, stick with what you have.

I use a corded Wahl... Have given myself every haircut I've had for the last 15 years or so, so I'm obviously pretty practiced.... But I think you just gotta get used to it. Indeed - don't try to cut your head hair with a cordless clipper- that's asking for pain and for to take twice as long and be less precise. Those things just don't have enough wattage to mow through a head of hair. Man I don't even use them on my beard anymore - too many damn snags.

Is there a Wahl model you'd recommend? I can certainly live with the cord, but would love to find something lighter, easier to move around. Thx!

Wahl pet groomers. Been using them for over two decades! Cordless are great for about 6 months...

I use a Wahl Peanut, which is pretty small. I also have a larger one that I use in the Spring when I first cut my hair down to a buzz cut - the Peanut will get it done but it stalls out in the thick brush from time to time. But once I cut it down, the Peanut works for the every two-week re-buzz. I use the #1 comb, so it's REAL short. I basically suck at growing hair on my head anymore, so I keep it all but shaved and feature the beard, which still comes in just fine. I'd probably shave the dome except that would take too much effort to maintain - likely need to shave it every 2-3 days. With a really short buzz, it looks almost bald when I first cut it and then after two weeks it's ready to be mowed down again.

They also make a cordless version, but it's got really limited horsepower. I have one that I take when I travel, but I have to cut it a lot more frequently or the cordless will stall a lot...

Ray,

Wow, that may be exactly what I'm looking for. I like a really close buzz too (not that time and nature have left me a great deal of hair-growing options). The small size and light weight could be ideal. Thanks_very_much for the suggestion!

You're welcome - hope it works as well for you as it does for me. I've had one for a loooooong time. I use it differently now than I used to, but it'a always been a handy little clipper to have...

rechargeable, rotating head, and user-selectable cutting height built into the unit. for the latter feature, it makes it easy to do cutting w/o changing cutting guides. there are 2 guides that put you in a range -- short or not-so-short. and within those ranges you can adjust to several levels.

i think this model has been replaced with something enhanced, but it works a treat!

yep -- now with li-ion battery (much needed) and water-resistant (not a big deal to me).

How do you like the peanut for beard trimming? I need a new unit and am debating cordless something vs the peanut.

I think you're over-thinking this. A much simpler option:

I use it for my beard too. Works fine. I use a #3 or #4 for my beard and a #1 on my head...

I upgraded from a Wahl to the Oster.
Nature has progressed my hair to the point that a cordless would probably be sufficient, but my son's hair was so thick that it would all but stop the Wahl. The Oster, on the other hand, mows through even his hair.

My point is that I think you've got exactly what you want. When I made my purchase, the 76 was the benchmark of clippers.

I have been using and Andis Speedmaster for 8 years and it works great. Great range of guide combs, very powerful so it does not pull or catch the hair.

Andis ProClip. The choice of pro dog groomers everywhere.

With an Andis ceramic edge 00000 blade.

I second the Wahl peanut suggestion...I think I've had mine since 2003. From my experience with Wahl clippers, lightly oil the blades after every haircut and they'll last forever.

I have been cutting my own hair for the last 25 years and about 10 years ago I upgraded to a Oster Classic 76.

It costs more but it does an amazing job.

I got the Wahl chrome pro 20 years ago and used it until I effed up the blades, so replaced it 5 years ago with another. Plenty of horsepower and works perfectly. Use a Philips Body glide for touch ups afterwards and for my legs.

That thing is a TANK though. Climb was specifically asking about smaller, lighter clippers...

Another vote here for a corded Wahl. I used one for years to cut mine and my dad's hair. It always worked great. Any bad haircuts I had weren't the fault of the clipper.. :help:

And another corded Wahl (model MC2) user here. Been cutting my hair for a long time and I was never bothered by the cord or the size of these clippers.

I've been cutting my own hair for 15 years at home. I bought the basic $30 kit that you find at Walmart etc. Never had any issues with it functionally but was getting on in "mileage" so about a year ago researched clippers. I wasn't budget shopping as I will use this for years but in the end, buying a pro level unit like the Oster was total overkill for weekly home use.

My choice ultimately was this kit:

https://www.amazon.com/Andis-Promotor-Clipper-Trimmer-29115/dp/B001BODNYO/ref=sr_1_34_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1472688702&sr=8-34&keywords=andis+kit

$30 but you get both the trimmer and regular clippers. Works great and you won't cry if it fails for some reason which realistically is unlikely.

Go with a HeadBlade - like a mini Zamboni for your head!

Very true. I have the Classic 76. It's super solid, powerful and will probably last forever. But it's unwieldy for me to use on myself. I ordered the Peanut. Hoping it lives up to its praise.;)

Just bought a Remington Virtually Indestructible Trimmer. Yes, that is what it is called! Around $40. Grey and yellow colored model. Smaller and lighter than the Wahl one I was using. Only had it about a month but very happy with it so far. Sold at Target and other stores like it.

Another Wahl man here. I bought it for $20 from Fred Meyer two decades ago, still use it. Use it on my dog too. We have to stagger our haircuts though, it's a little too matchy matchy if we both get a cut at the same time.
