Who's in line for some of these?

I get that the all lace design of the Empire works well for folks with providing a custom snug fit and also provides a cool retro look.

This new design of adding velcro straps looks very clunky and Frankenstein which is departure from clean designed products they typically produce.

If they did this lace setup for an MTB shoe I would buy it yesterday. I love my Empires since the laces are so adaptable to the shape of my foot but don't love the idea of untying them if they're caked in mud so I've stuck with velcro/ratcheting closure shoes for 'cross.

They'll probably make a MTB one. The Empires started out as road and got a MTB version, so if people like these I bet they will. I'm not sold on the look but kinda want to try them. Have and like both regular Factors and Empires and like some qualities of each better than the other.

Isn't this kind of the worst of both worlds?

I like them, you don't have to worry about tying the shoelace and tucking it in yet get the comfort of tied shoe's. If you don't have bunions (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bunions/basics/definition/con-20014535), you won't know what I'm talking about. If you do, you know what I'm talking about. You actually get the best of both worlds. Keeping it looser at the toe box yet secure in the heal and upper foot. Straps at the toe box inevitably pinch atop the bunion.

I practice and race in them but towards the middle of the season, I do my warm up laps in my old Privateers. they're easier to get on/off, plus that means if they're caked in mud/snow/etc, I still get to start with clean/dry shoes.

I had a friend break a cleat screw mid-race last year and have to swap that shoe in the pit. he had velcro/ratchet shoes, but that would have SUCKED with lace-ups!

also, my opinion of these shoes is just that they appeal to those that like the flexibility of laces but want to ratchet down their shoes super tightly before a sprint, while on the bike. also, they're ugly.

adidas had that corded velcro approach back when hushovd was in racing for credit agricole. then mavic took over -- their approach is not quite so awash in cords, but basically the same:

Look like the same OEM maker for Mavic shoes with the lace velcro fastening and buckle ratchet since the last decade.
They also came out with the boa and lace a couple years ago.

Well, Tufo keeps offering that tubular clincher, so this must be a viable market segment.

IMO the worst aspect of lace-ups is having to actually tie and untie them, and the second worst aspect is not being able to adjust them on the fly, so not really.

"Should we do Boa, velcro, or laces for our next shoe?"

"yes"

Yes, indeed it was the same manufacturer.... Adidas stopped selling cycling gear about 2009 and Mavic immediately stepped into the breach with models which were substantially similar.

My Adidas Road Ultras still get worn several times a week and I find the corded velcro and buckle very comfortable.

I had a pair of Mavic Zwillium (sp ??) but sold 'em because the heel cupping was lower cut and not to my liking.

After using all the systems my favorite is Velcro and buckle which is great since it's the cheapest system. I tried the laces and was ok, I liked it but still prefer Velcro/bucket. I straight up don't like boa.

If I'm remembering correctly, both Adidas and Mavic worked with Salomon on their footwear development. My Mavic MTB shoes (which I love, btw) have a similar tread pattern to my Salomon trail runners.

Salomon used to be owned by Adidas and were sold to Amer (Mavic's owner) in 20014...hence the shoes being on the same family tree.

The Giro Empires look like the old Adidas Super Pro Classic to me.

Like half of the country uses double wide shoes ala bont and have problems with support and who knows what else, when is going to be the day that they actually design a shoe ALA bont, a lot of support, super stiff and super wide?? Maybe never?
