So Levi said in his video interview (on cyclingnews) that there was a reason for his cruddy ride, but he didn't want to share it because he doesn't make excuses.

But, I can't for the life of me figure out why he doesn't shave that fringe off. He might look and feel better - more youthful and fit. He looks like an old librarian right now. Not that there is anything wrong with that. He just doesn't look fast.

I watched the time trial a couple of times and Levi was out of the saddle an awful lot, even on what looked to be relatively flat places.

In the interview where he said he "didn't want to make excuses" he also said "it's a common problem"

So I'll speculate he's got the saddle sore from hell.
