Looking to put a veloce 13-29 cassette on with 10spd centaur group. This should be a painless transition and work without issue right?

Yeah,
It will work fine. 10s=10s most of the time.

Great, thanks!

you going to leave that 53/39 on there or switch to a compact?

I've mixed and matched all of the Campag 10 speed without problems-- Veloce cassettes work perfectly with Centaur shifters/derailleurs. Make sure your derailleur has the capacity for the large cog and total range of teeth, and get the chain length right... But Campy 10 speed components all mix well (the compact vs. normal front derailleur issue sounds irrelevant to your question...).

Are you asking if your RD can handle the 29t cog?

The only compact cranks I have at the moment are 9 and 11spd. I don't have a 11spd cassette and not sure I have a compatible wheelset either. I may try to tough out the big climbs with the 53/39. I am going to hit some steep grades today and see how I feel after I switch the cassette.

just so you know. both a 9-sp and 11-sp compact crank will play nicely with a 10-sp drivetrain, no problem.

It's not like the 9s and 11s chainrings are incompatible with a 10s chain.

Yes

First thing is to choose your crank and calculate chain wrap. While I think they may be officially rated to shift 27t max cogs, dollars to doughnuts says 29t is a non-issue.

Can I run the entire athena 11spd with a 10spd cassette?

no. wont shift properly. with 11-sp shifters, you need an 11-sp RD, cassette and chain.

Alright, I am going to start with the cassette change and see how it goes. The steep grades as d2r2 are unpaved correct?

I run 13-29 cassettes on short cage RDs with 53/39 chainrings on a great deal of my bikes. No issues. Adjust body tension on RD and use correct chain length.

Yes, without issue, make sure chain length proper, just enough for big-big combo.

No, 11s spacing different than 10s(closer together)...

Actually it doesn't need to be '11s' rear derailleur...a 10s, 2011-2014 rear Der will shift 11s fine.

A short cage rear derailleur, 13/29 cassette and a 53/39 crank all work for me on 10 speed Campag drivetrains.

If you're riding the Deerfield route with a standard crank, I am not sure that a 13/29 will get you out of trouble on the steeper grades and more difficult gravel sections, though. Reach out to some of the participants from years past for advice.
