Still looks dorky... why the full suspension? And what does the rider carry in his Camelbak??

Camera on his back. And the bike is a modified city bike, hence the suspension. I've driven a couple of them on the track. The tires are pretty narrow so compared to motorcycle tires there isn't much cushioning from them, and they are pumped up fairly hard for this use. The suspension helps a bit. Also, riding the bankings the suspension makes it easier to keep the bike on a constant line and speed.

I kind of hate how casual the derny rider looks; definitely like some dingus that rides an e-bike. That's not beautiful, THIS is beautiful:

Does the rider control the speed or is it programmatically controlled?

My vote is for the Dutch hells angels look as well. The guy in Rio looks like he got lost on his way to work.

I see him working a control on the stem area. He must be turning it up to higher power.

Still done. Steher racing still happens in Europe. An American friend of ours, who also has a national Madison jersey, does it: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/american-kovalcik-keeps-steher-tradition-alive-at-berlin-six-day/
