View Full Version : 650b on CAADX disc?

Was pretty impressed after building a non-disc CAADX up for a friend. Light, stiff, great tire clearances, fender mounts, and cheap.

As time goes on, I'm drinking more deeply of the large tire koolaid. I'm a bigger guy, and I spend most of my time on urban Cinci streets, which are woefully under-maintained. Started out with 28's on my commuter rig, and I'm now up to 35's, which is as far as I can go on that bike.

I would like to try one of the 40+ sized Compass tires, like the Babyshoe Pass, and thought it might work OK on a CAADX disc. Yeah, like most of my off-the-wall thoughts, budget is a significant accelerant to this fire. Not like I'm loosing much on the diameter, compared to a more modest 700c tire, and it already has less BB drop than a typical road frame.

Should be great. 42-584 with fenders is how I like to roll on bad pavement.

Go for it! I'm been thinking about doing the same thing with my Caadx.

Damn enablers, every last one of you. :) Of course, I would do the same if the situation was reversed.

Offer just made on frameset.

I think you'll have a really sweet byce if you can do this conversion! The OD of the 42mm 650B tire basically the same as 23mm 700C so your BB height will stay the same if you can clear the 42s! You can potentially build a flyweight fat tire all road bike on this frame...I think it's brilliant!

Keep us posted on the progress! :hello:

Posted an offer Sunday night for about 10% under listing, and it just arrived yesterday.

A few thoughts. I'm a clyde, and have never paid much attention to overall weight, but for once, thought it might be fun to build something a bit more flickable. This frame is by far the lightest I've ever built up. Holy down tube baby, it is almost the diameter of a soda can. Although it looks almost unused, I might have to resort to a paint job if it remains in the stable. The base black, with giant "CANNONDALE" logos emblazoned on every surface leaves me cold. I don't have a 650 disc wheelset built yet, but did try a non-disc set, shod with 1.5" Gravel Kings. Tons of room. If interested, can take a couple photos later.

Now, I need to find a 32h, 135OLD, disc hub to lace to the Pacenti SL23 rims I picked up last year on special. Probably going to use a Shutter Precision dyno hub (28h there) on the front, as this might become a commuter/all around beater for me. Might try TRP Spyre brakes, or recycle the BB7's on a seldom used Karate Monkey. Everything else, I have in the parts pile.

Good on ya!

Shimano FH-RS505 is under $40 and will fit all Shim/SRAM non-XD cassettes. FWIW, I am super happy with my Spyre SLC calipers. If I had one piece of advice it would be to go even wider on the rims. But, dance with who brought you and all. . .

I would love to see some photos of the clearance with the gravel kings!

Shimano SLX is pretty inexpensive. CX70 is nicer but only in 28h.

ColonelJLloyd's suggestion of the Shimano RS505 is totally on target. From what I read, it is a 105 level hub, and Treefort Bikes has it for $33. Also, works out the door with 11s. The CX70 hub certainly looks nice, but as you found out, it doesn't appear to be available in anything other than 28h. The next, widely available option, is a DT Swiss 350, but at almost $200. Yeah, there is a decent Novatec, and some other oddball stuff in between, but nothing that is widely available, at least that I can see.

Didn't get a photo yet, but I placed my 130 non-disc rear, with a 1.5" Gravel King, and took a caliper measurement. On the rear, it looks like the chain stays are the limiting feature, with a stay-to-stay width measurement of ~51mm, corresponding to the widest point on the Gravel Kings. In other words, a 42-44 is about the largest one could expect to fit on this particular frame. Should still be able to fit a fender, as diameter is not the limiting feature.

If it helps, my 1.75" Pari Motos measure 44.5mm on 26mm internal rims setup tubeless.

Shimano FH-RS505

Are there hub dimensions online for this hub? It seems like it's so new I can't find anything.

OK, some photos of clearance. A little parallax error, just due to camera position. Shown caliper readings represent actual clearance. Those are 1.5" Gravel Kings, which measure right around 38mm. Realistically, 44mm could work, with fenders too.

Side view, mocked up with saddle set to appropriate height and some old shallow drop bars. Going to work just fine, I think. A bit heavy on the branding though. If it stays, thinking of matte navy blue, with only a simple headbadge:

Going to have to build another wheelset first. Obviously, the photos feature a non-disc, photo stand-in set. Those are soon to go on my college bike, an oddball, early 80's Raleigh USA model, that came with 650b.

Having trouble sourcing the 28h, SP dynamo hub, in the center-lock variation. Shows on SP's site, but not even on their internal store. Wouldn't mind a SON, but not ready to open the wallet wide enough for a new one.

Might consider a 32/32 set, which means bagging the 28/ 32 Pacenti SL23's and finding some new rims. Perhaps one of the budget DT offerings, like the x392 or m442 would fit the bill?

Pretty sure the major importer of SP hubs, Merry Sales, only stocks 32 and 36 hole versions. I'm running 32h Blunt SS rims on my lightish, definitely fat, dynamo road wheelset and I would turn my nose up at having to go back to narrower rims. For running these light, fast, supple, fat tires the world of wide rims and tubeless setups is awesome. I would choose the lightest and widest rim your budget allows.
