Saw this Craigslist Trek Madone, autograph by -7 himself:

https://indianapolis.craigslist.org/bik/5728082862.html

This poor guys is trying to sell this bike a decade too late. Asking only $12,500 for an autographed Trek Madone.

From the ad:

"We'll meet at a mutually secure location, in daytime hours, once prior details are secure. There will be a reasonable fee between $150.00 to $300.00 for this delivery. It includes the bike, signed print and certificate of authenticity."

Well, I might have considered it if he had thrown in free shipping, but $150+ is a deal breaker.

My team shop in Madison had one of these on the wall - they probably still do. Back when I was racing for them, it was technically for sale, for $10k but I'm not sure they would have sold it even if offered.

Charing a $150-300 "delivery fee" is ridiculous for anything at this price point, unless you are asking the guy to personally drive it to your doorstep 3+ hours away. Edit - which I see that he will do that, but under the guise of - I'm going to go visit my friend/family in one of these places and will bring the bike with me - why not let you pay for me to visit my family. Thats a douche move. It's a bike. Collect your cash, call bikeflights, move on.

Maybe the seller does know, and is hoping the prospective buyer doesn't know/care (I'd wager on mostly the former).

isn't anything that's meant to be 'collectable' generally isn't? I'd say a 50th anniversary Paramount is far more collectable than a gussied-up Trek. LA signature or not...I think this guy is going to have a really nice paperweight for a long, long time.

imo, the seller is more interested in bragging about how he's the top **** of bike riding than he is in selling this bike.

I think everyone is being a little hard on the guy . . . he feels, rightly or wrongly, that he's got a collectible item and he's valued it accordingly. It's his economic opportunity . . . the market will answer the question though whether it really is or not.

Collectibles, art, real estate . . . are exchanged around someone's perceived value, not intrinsic value (which I don't think exists anyway). His bike is certainly not for me, but there might be someone who thinks it's just perfect . . .

I saw it posted on the Atlanta Craigslist too. Probably smart that he casts a wide net!

I think it would look great hanging on the wall at Floyd's of Leadville.

I dont think he doesnt know, this is a special edition bike trek came up a few years back and they were asking like 12000 bucks for that POS back then at the stores, only a few were made and sure this guy bought to make some money out of it after wards.

Now he needs money and needs to get his money back, thing is not going to happen ever. The only people that made money out of those bikes were Trek, the stores and maybe LA, who ever bought that bike screwed up.

Dude is so screwed if he paid that much back in the day, and even if LA was the super champion he was, the bike could worth nothing anyways. Not even EM bikes worth that much.

It's not a horrible bike. That cable routing is a cluster.. But that's fixable.

For a factory Trek, it's pretty dope. I like it. I'd ride the **** out of it, if someone gave it to me. But I wouldn't pay $1200 for it, let alone $12,000.

Reminds me of the guy who spent $15k on Ryan Braun memorabilia....

Nevertheless, at the end of the day, if this guy doesn't get what he is seeking, at least he has a decent bike that he can ride! And isn't that what cycling is all about?! YMMV!

Good Luck!

Now there's some thinking, for a Friday. I like it.

Maybe I will offer to trade him my OJ Simpson autographed football for it...and as a gesture of sportsmanship, I will waive my delivery/meeting fee.

I feel like if you met this guy, he'd talk your ear off. He already unloaded his life story in the craigslist ad. As if there weren't enough red flags already.

Seriously, can you sue to trek for something like this? like... "you sold me something that was unique and now worth nothing?"

ps: remember the yellow bike trek made too, like 200 made, signed and stuff aswell., looked at lot better than this one, a 15000 bucks bike? no way.

Maybe you could sue Wada for making it worthless too, they obviously should have caught him after 4-5 victories and could have completely avoided this 6th tdf commemorative bike investment... built with alloy wheels and a "meh" truvative crank.

$12k isn't going to happen until Lance gets his titles back. Although maybe if he includes some "peddles" then he could pedal his wares. ;)

You know... It not like this sort of thing hasn't happened before- people HAVE robbed and even murdered people via craigslist.

My mother's neighbor got ripped off his BMW on Craig's. Wasn't violent, but is just an example of the fact that you have to at least be thinking about it. Dude seemed legit... Well-dressed, well spoken, older gentleman type... Paid the guy with a check (don't remember if it was a personal check or fraudulent cashiers check or what), left with the bimmer, went up to the local grocery parking lot where he met with another "buyer" and sold HIM the car for some substantially lower price- cash, though. Handed the guy the keys and freshly signed-over title and vanished.

Screwed two people for thousands in 30 minutes.

Dirt bikes and craigslist in a metro area make for big trouble/danger for the seller. The wheelie boyz do not actually pay for them. Some towns have taken to having a craigslist sales haven at the cop shop with video and the works. Not a bad idea

Be careful and vigilant

Eff it, I kinda like this take on Lance. His worst crime was being a jerk, which he was really good at. He was a terrible person but great bike rider. I'll still watch all those old WCP DVDs of his wins without guilt.

I didn't watch a single stage of le Tour this year. First time in years
