I'm looking for a reasonably good, disc brake ready, wheelset for cross and gravel but want to spend $300 or less. There seems to be a ton of choices -- what's the best option?

What are the wheels you are considering?
Are you talking new or used?
If you buy used you can get a lot more for your 300 compared to new.

just one point of clarification, the cheap wheels are certainly going to be disc brake only.
My El Mariachi came with Shimano SLX wheels which I replaced with custom wheels. I thought about selling them, but then I looked on ebay and they go for just about nothing there <$200. I figured I could come up with a use for them at that price. Only downside is TA front, 10mm rear. 9mm front, 10mm rear is getting to be more rare.

I am open to new or used.
These are a 2nd set of wheels for disc build.
I'd like as light a weight as my budget will allow.
QR F/R.
135mm Spacing.
11-speed
There are a TON of wheels of the Bay but it's hard to assess one versus another.

Shimano cx75 hubs laced to DT 460db rims should be under $300 if you shop carefully.

Not sure how light you are going to get for under $300, but these look promising.

That looks like a pretty decent set of wheels!

Those are a winner. Exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find. Thanks!

Not necessarily a comment on any MO place but I'd have somebody who builds wheels well check true/round/dish/tension on these and also stress relieve, before ya ride 'em. This place does build some wheels but they also just buy-resell.

The link is dead. What were they?
I have bought a number of wheelsets from Velomine and have always been happy with what I got, especially for the price.

I picked up some Vuelta Nine LE wheels from Nashbar back in December for my commuter. They came in ~300g LIGHTER than advertised (~1680g with rim strips). They have held up well so far, but I don't know that they are available anymore. $150 was a steal at that weight.

I'd go with these Fulcrum Racing 5's for about $250:
