My hybrid commuter wheels are about worn out. The brake track is no longer flat and the front brake pulses even though the wheel is true.

The these are 700 wheels but the rear is 135mm spaced. I would like to keep costs way down on these but would like them durable.

I am running 7 speed so no fancy stuff is needed.

what rims are on there now? the most economical option is to overhaul the hubs with some fresh grease and replace the rims with new ones.

othewise a set of TB14 or Archetype wheels laced to 5700 or 5800 hubs from velomine is pretty much impossible to beat for new kit.

+1. I paid $200 shipped for 5800 > TB14s and they have been great so far.

Can I use the that 5800 /TB-14 setup on a 135mm spaced frame?

You just need to swap the axle to convert the hub. You can probably steal it from your current wheel.

+1 on velomine. Great customer service.

I was also gonna say velomine... never used them but can't beat the prices

Yes, but...

The 5800 uses a standard 10mm x 1mm threaded axle, but the "locknuts" are now "endcaps" so you need to cut the axle down. I did one for 135mm spacing and I had to cut the actual axle down to 128mm IIRC. Once you screw the "endcaps" over the axle they measure out to 135mm.

I have a set of 135mm spaced 5700 hubs laced to Velocity Synergy 36* rims if you are interested. Very stout, cheap.

Thanks you guys. Boy it would be really ideal to use a 130mm hub so that I can repurpose them later.

What's the frameset made out of? If steel, just squeeze it to fit or cold set to 130. Then you have the 130 wheels, without mod, to use in the future.

I see R500ish wheels on Craig's all the time for like $100. People love those wheels for commuters.

Not 135.. But your chain stays won't notice 2.5mm each, will they?

These have been bombproof for me. I have the Corsa Pros. Not the lightest, but for the price can't be beat. Great for training in the rain.

I got a set of Fulcrum Racing 7s off the local CL several years ago for like $120. Plenty of commuting miles, gravel rides, and even a few CX races with out complaint. Heavy, bomb proof, and cheap (disposable) bearings when they do need service.

The icing on the cake was they came with a set of dura-ace skewers which are certainly worth more than the wheels at this point.

IMO, I think it's fine to do that. I've seen plenty of people it with 135mm spaced non-disc cross bikes - running regular 130 hubs. Possible complications are chainline/der hanger alignment, and small possibility of metal fatigue from flexing the stays - but the people I've seen do it haven't had any problems outside of needing to tweak the der hanger alignment slightly.

Could also toss a 5mm spacer on the NDS of an 130 wheel and re-dish. Would actually wind up with a slightly stronger wheel that way.

If only that were true. 5600/5700 use a simple, 10by 1 threaded axle and locknuts but 5800(and 6800/9000) use a proprietary axle end(front and rear) with a unique to that axle cap..you can still do it but have to some measuring and such to allow for the axle end cap.

Thanks so much everyone. I was clearly not thinking out of the box. My options are clearly better than I was thinking. I just did not want to spend a ton of money on a bike that I may or may not have next year.

I think it would be best to get a decent set of wheels that I can use a longer axle. That way I can have them for a different build with 130mm spacing using a shorter axle.

Or I guess the really easy thing to do is cold set the frame. 130 wheels are easier to come by and less $.
