My 650b experiment is hitting a bit of a road block. I've got 42mm of clearance on my front fork. It fits a 700x28c tire with just enough clearance but the sides do not taper out very much so there is ~42mm of total width where a 650b tire would be. 42c pari motos didn't fit and schwalbe g-ones didn't fit. I'm a little wary of trying the 38c pari moto / gravel king.

I'm looking for something that measures no more than 35mm wide on a 24mm rim. Does such a tire exist? I only know of the Grand Bois Cypres 32c and the Hutchinson confrérie des 650. Is it even worth going up to a 650b x 32mm tire from a 700x28mm tire?

I have the Confrerie's in 32's and Pari Moto's in 34's. I have 2-3 rides on each one. I have gone back to 700 X 28's.

That's a big drop in diameter which will effect the handling of the bike. It's not just BB height, you have to consider the effect on the trail and flop of the front end. I notice this with different diameters on my disc bike.

I currently use 1.6 Pari Motos which measure 40mm on rims with a 23mm internal width. They might be narrower on your rims.

What bike do you have?

Hey 93legendti,

I'm thinking of trying the same 650b conversion. What did you like and dislike about the 650b x 32/34mm vs. 700c x 28mm? Which 700c x 28mm did you return to?

I've got Conti Ultra Sport II's, Pasela's and Hutchinson Sectors. Not sure why, but I just prefer 700c wheels. Plenty of people swear by 650b.

The bike has a Whisky Thru-Axle Road Fork. Rim is a crest ZTR with a 24.4 width.

I guess one other option is to keep 700x28 in front and use a 650bx42 in back since most of the weight(panniers) is in back.

Did they make a pari-moto in 34? I only see 38 and 42. Do you still have them?

I still have them. I can not make out the width on the label. Maybe they are 38's. Let me check my order

Yeah, those 1.5" tires are 38 - 584. Black sidewalls? Wanna trade for a 42? Or sell it for cheap?

My 28c Roubaix pros actually measure 29.5 on an SL25 Rim. The difference in axle height between that and the 42c Pari moto is 7-8mm. Maybe a bit more since I think the 42c will compress more. I have a 72mm BB Drop. It's looking like keeping the 700x28c up front might be the best compromise.
