You couldn't pay me to go to this.

Presume the cyclists will be drinking nothing but bottled water.

The whole Olympic model is effed. The idea of spreading the economic and cultural benefits around the world is a nice idea, but it doesn't work. Building a small city in a new place every four years is just grossly wasteful. They should probably rotate the games between 4 or 5 established host cities and stop this nonsense.

yes, it doesn't do much for the communities, just lines a few fat pockets, making them fatter. I was living in South Africa during World Cup 2009. guess what the stadiums are being used for now? yup, you guessed it, most likely low income housing...

Rio is going to be interesting.

Bring food, water and bodyguards.

Reportedly Bernie's mother in law was kidnapped last Friday.....US$36 million ransom demand.

Correct. Kidnappings in Rio are just as common.

ColonelLloyd might be on to something. Rotate the Olympics between a few cities.

More evidence many venues won't likely be ready....

"Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - The Australian Olympic team will not move into the athletes village in Rio after it was condemned as "not safe or ready" by the country's chef de mission on Sunday.

Team chief Kitty Chiller said problems include blocked toilets, leaking pipes, exposed wiring, darkened stairwells where no lighting has been installed and dirty floors in need of a massive clean.

She claimed that water has come through the ceiling resulting in large puddles on the floor around cabling and wiring.

"Due to a variety of problems in the Village, including gas, electricity and plumbing I have decided that no Australian Team member will move into our allocated building," she said in a statement...."

their advice to swimmers is "keep your mouth closed." while you're competing in an endurance event at the highest level of the sport. riiiiight...

man, and I thought Cleveland/Lake Erie had some issues!

I competed on some nasty bodies of water in my rowing days - Lake Onondaga in Syracuse comes to mind. Got explicit instructions from our coaching staff, and the staffs of the teams that were hosting the races to keep our mouth closed if we fell in. There were rumors of hazmat/detox requirements if you were to go more than 6ft below the surface - but never heard that from anyone in a position of authority on the matter.

I hope most of the athletes are able to stay healthy. Bottled water (even for teeth brushing), no ice cubes in drinks, and closed mouth showers are a must for all the competitors. This article reinforces what I've read elsewhere, that it isn't a matter of if, but how many will get sick. Truly sucks for athletes that have dedicated a huge portion of their lives to competing at this level, on this stage, to get sidelined by a completely preventable issue.

Warning: don't read that NYT article before a meal.

I feel bad for the generally good folks of Brazil.

Their government is currently even more messed up than usual, there was lots and lots of $$$ blown on sponsoring the World Cup and the Olympics, and then...

... add in the health disaster of Zika...

yeah, the picture of a dead body just floating along where the swimmers will compete doesn't mix well with the morning bowl of cheerios....

makes the east river or gowanus canal look downright sparkling.

I will row through s**t for you, America.

Great! Now that we have that cleared up, get behind us and and cheer your faces off. Put your rally caps on. Let’s pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. Let’s go for the gold together. Pick your best cliché that will get you fired up to watch American athletes put their hearts and souls in to their performances in Rio in a few weeks, and when the urge strikes to comment on the poop, just go right ahead and keep it to yourself.

POWER THE POOP UP! I'm pulling for you...just try not to catch a crab on anything floating in the water! ;)

I think the protective technology going into the US rowing teams uniforms is really interesting, but I'd be way more worried about getting the water in my mouth or eyes. Link about the mfg. process:

Put permanent facilities in Greece, have all 'member' countries pay for it. Helps Greece, keeps from creating Olympic slums.

I'd be okay with that. Since I suspect that more than a fair share would come from the US, the US might like to have some of those games on US soil, though.

Edna Mode: I cut it a little roomy for the free movement, the fabric is comfortable for sensitive skin... [a sheet of flame erupts in front of the suit] And it can also withstand a temperature of over 1,000 degrees. Completely bulletproof... [four heavy machine guns appear and open fire on the suit, without effect] And machine washable, darling. That's a new feature.

I thought Rio was a place I wanted to visit before the Olympic stories started popping up. Bodies floating in the water, seriously?

When you are sprinting toward the end of a 2,000 meter race...keeping your mouth closed is next to impossible. The coxswain will facing right into it while barking out...as I said, next to impossible.

Hmmm, :)

Buddy of mine held up by gunpoint there while on vacation. Robbed of wallet, etc.

In a nice area, no less.

Like I said in my first post, you couldn't pay me to go there.

It does seem very wasteful to continue down the unsustainable path of having the olympics in a different host city every four years. Certainly there could be a "neutral" place where an olympic village could be created.
